We are NOT the number one defense but nobody can disagree with one fact: we are ONE HELL OF A LOT BETTER THEN LAST YEAR! And that is what matters. If our O continues executing and we shy away from those pansy 4th quarter play calling, we will be fine!

Hey let me rephrase: statistically we may be number one but you and I know we are not yet the REAL NUMBER ONE of the bunch... That was what i meant ;)

I wonder what ours and Minnesotas defenses would be ranked if we had to play teams of the offensive caliber of NO and Arizona regularly.

I mean come on, we each get to play Chicago and Detroit twice a year. This year we got the AFC central which don't exactly light it up.

My point is I don't think we have the number 1 defense because I don't believe we could shut down NO, Arizona, Minnesota, New England, or the Colts.

I do however think that we have made tremendous strides this season and I anticipate with great enthusiasm continued improvement.

Maybe we should put this conversation on hold until after the playoffs? I really believe the best way to judge a defense is big plays allowed and at what consistency can you get off the field on third down. When we played the Vikings, we gave up too much of both. Another good gauge is hits / sacks on the quarterback. Yards per game just doesn't cut for me. It's like saying you're a 10-6 division champion and the rest of your division is 4-12. I'm sorry but you just won a weak fricken division and you're gonna get pounded by a more tested team in the playoffs.

You're right on all counts. I think our D is inconsistent right now. They've shown the potential for greatness but have also had some very poor games, relative to the quality of the opposing offenses. Taking a quick look at the numbers in my power rankings Excel table, they have had 4 good performances and 4 bad performances.
You have to also consider growing pains of a new system. All of the players say they are becoming much more comfortable in Capers' scheme lately.
I don't think it's a given that they get pounded by any tested team in the playoffs, although it is possible.

why do we have to be so pessimistic???

ok, maybe we are not the best D but for sure we are a top 10 and maybe a top 5....with a lot of room of improvement...and if we think to last year.

so i am optimistic for the next year and we can be dangerous even this year.

It's not pessimism, all I'm saying is tread lightly with being called the #1 defense. We were the # 1 pass defense last year until Brees lit us up like a Christmas tree.

Click HERE  to see that we ARE the number one ranked defense. Unless, you don't think the NFL.com website speaks the truth.

Granted, its by yards, not the greatest measurement of how a overall defense performs.
