.... Not really.

We lost Al and Kampman, leaving us with 4 rookies on the field: Mathews, Jones, Underwood (on dime), and Raji (on some downs). Add to that we had Jared Bush as our nickel/outside CB.

In addition, The 49ers finally opened their playbook and started looking for Crabtree and Davis. Their TD catches were extremely good work on the offense as opposed to bad D.

The O needs to find its rhythm and put up points in the second half, and the STs need to cover better (again, giving up long return at key point)..... but give the 49ers credit as oppose to blaming Mike McCarthy entirely.

I think it was meant on O. We had a 23-3 halftime lead and got all soft on the Niners. They won the second half 21-7.

We shouldn't be doing that crap. Note on the other side of the pond, Vikings kept attacking until they had a 35-3 lead. The fat lady doesn't sing at 23-3 with 30 minutes left. She sings at 35-3 with 10:21 left.

I hate this going soft stuff. We should have continued running up the score until it was guaranteed out of reach. As it goes, we only won this game by 6 points.

The Niners suck. I've watched half their games this year. Plus we had home field advantage. This was a sloppy win - sloppy not by the usual definition but sloppy as we almost let it slip away. Especially not acceptable had we been playing a real team.

I beg to differ.
McCarthy started trying to run out the clock as soon as the Packers got the ball in the second half.
Defensively I agree with you. Injuries took a toll and anytime you are depending on Bush to cover it's tough going..
We did run the ball pretty well against their highly rated rushing defense though.

I don't buy the "played not to lose" non-sense. We were running the ball well, and I don't blame Aaron/MM for sticking with what was working. Let's not forget the sacks we've given up, and the fact that we play again on 3 days rest. Running the ball well is a big remedy for our ailments on the O-line.

No need to risk putting Aaron in any more danger than he needed to be, and I'm glad MM and/or Aaron got that point.

Running the ball well and getting points are often two separate things. Look what the Niners did. They pretty much abandoned the run and racked up 3 TDs in the 2nd half.

That game was too close. Not acceptable, especially considering the Niners are not at all a good team.

I think Bush will be ok against Detoilet. But man, we got some serious games coming up.
Is Bush good enough to hold up in the playoffs? Because they basically start for us in December.

So he went Childress on us? Great.

"rabidgopher04" wrote:

That's exactly my gripe. Childress himself stayed aggressive until they got to 35-3 in the 4th Q. Even with Jackson in there, he kept the ball in the air and got them another TD and only got all conservative with a 35-3 lead.

We got all conservative with a 23-3 lead with a half of football still to play. I remember once watching us losing 23-0 in the first half against the Rams and coming back to win 35-23.

You can't relax like this with an entire half left to play. MM really pissed me off today.

Interesting point zombie... I'd heard that the 49ers weren't the greatest team, but played hard and very physical.

I was intrigued by how we'd respond to a physical team, and I think we played them well.

Couple of problems that never should have happened like STs coverage breakdown again, but some of the plays the 49ers made were damn good plays that couldn't be defended much better against.

We do have to sustain drivers and get points though - that is definitely an area of concern. Overall, I think the game was not as close as the score would indicate.

Good argument but I really think MM goes into the play not to lose mode when he gets a decent lead.

I agree; the 49ers gave the Vikings a real tough fight when they faced them. I remember Brett saying they were a very physical good young team.

Historically, MM talks big about being more physical, but fails to deliver. I'm happy we matched the physicality of the 49ers today, something that is a big positive for sure.
