First of all, this is a conversation for the offseason. We have to go with what we have.

In the offseason we need to do a few things. Draft a blue chip LT, sign a veteran Tackle not named Clifton or Tauscher (We do have loyalty to them, check their bank accounts.), and draft two more interior lineman to supplant Spitz and Colledge. Sign Spitz & Colledge to their 1 year tenders offers as RFA and see which one of them wants a job. Hire a new OLine coach.

Why the heck would we get rid of Spitz. He rarely gets penalties and has given up less sacks than any of our other lineman in the last 2 seasons.

Campen does not know the ZBS other than the one year under Jags.

How does ZBS fit into a pass blocking scheme? It doesn't.. different animal all together.

We lack solid fundamentals in pass and run blocking on this line, while I highly buy into the Campen mismatch on the run blocking scheme, it does not translate into the piss poor fundamentals in pass blocking.

Sorry, but my patience with Campen evaporated early in 08'... and I voiced my opinion that he should have been shown the door with the defensive staff this past offseason.

I do believe our run blocking issues are related to the fact that we don't chop in our version of this quasi ZBS system, which dictates that blend in drive and zone blocking principles.. but the does not excuse the freaking reason that we are a piss poor club in raw basic blocking fundamentals.

And that right there is my reason that Campen and Fonteno should be shown the door.. they have had 3 plus years to establish a core group with solid fundamentals.. they haven't done it to date.

Sorry.. but IMO.. Campen should be relieved of his positional coaching the offensive line on this club.. either he struggles at getting his message home, or the players have tuned him out. It isn't like he was a pro bowl lineman in his days either..

I didn't say get rid of him or Colledge, I said to give them 1 year deals as restricted free agents and let them earn their long contracts. I'm not convince either player has earned the money yet.

I'm not OL smarty that's for sure, but when posed the question of how the ZBS effects pass blocking it seems obvious to me.

ZBS - lighter athletic OL
Power O - heavier strong OL

Power O gives you a better crop of OL to play with, in my ignorance.

This is exactly why technique, leverage and footwork fundamentals in pass blocking needs to be tuned.. they can't compete in raw size and power.. so the lack of fundamentals is even more critical and currently exposed even further.

If you are in the 300 lb neighborhood, there is no freaking way that you shouldn't be able to compete in pass blocking.. IMO the breakdowns are in those base fundamentals and blocking scheme reads and communication.. that in the end has little to do with the size and blocking scheme in the running game.

But I completely agree that our bastardized version of the ZBS and the lack of coaching experience leads to the inconsistencies that we see in our running game and overall effectiveness.

On the running game side, it also helps to commit to the run enough to get the line and back into a groove.. but that is a different topic.

I think I figured our OL average weight to be 313lbs. I'd like that to be over 330, not sure why, that just seems like a good number to me.

I want ta smash mouth, kick you while your down OL. take no prisoners.

if we are talking offseason. Regardless of who is out there, I am still in favor of dumping the entire ZBS. It obviously isn't going anywhere after this many years! Its a win now/have success now league. And it has shown no signs of life.

I find that any listed weight of O-linemen is wrong.

For example, Spitz is listed at 303. In an article in MJS, Spitz said he gained weight, and was closer to 315ish.

Scott Wells has also spoken of adding weight this off-season.

Website tallies of weight often relay the weight of players as rookies, I think.
