The holes were definitely larger, but it seems like he broke a lot of 2nd level tackles in the secondary to break free for long runs in '07. Maybe I'm thinking too simply, but he doesn't look like the same player to me.

Now he is having to break 1st level tackles to even get to the 2nd level contact, how many tackles is a guy supposed to break every run?

This game I don't see how any judgement can be made. He got 10 carries, that's it. On multiple carries I saw him have to give 110% effort just to make it around the edges to get the line of scrimmage while being chased by unblocked defenders. He absolutely destroyed Madieu Williams. If it wasn't for the few big plays that AP got gaping holes and able to go untouched into the secondary he had a worse average than Grant, but he also got 25 carries. 250% more chances of making a big play. Whether it's the talent of the oline, or this lame attempt at a run scheme (because MM is such a great schemer), it isn't working. And Grant is being pulled down because of that. I've been a broken record on this topic, but this game only illustrates further the need at a philosophy change up front.

In order for our run game to succeed Ryan Grant has to run the ball at least 20 times. Why? Because with our run blocking it takes that many tries to open up some holes for Grant. And when they do Grant takes advantage of it. Only knock i have on Grant is he runs with his head down too much.

I agree. Although I don't know if it is "because" of our run blocking. A lot of teams have to get the volume of carries up to establish the run game. We're no different. Although, again, it makes no sense to run a bunch of times against Minnesota -- and if our lack of running production is in question here, we absolutely have to take into account the fact that we've played a shutdown run defense twice this short season.

Hence the importance of running screens. But we can't do that with Grant, because he will drop the ball. Like on that two point conversion yesterday.

That ball was deflected by one of the Williams. Other than that Grant had a few nice catches.

It bounced off his bicep. I still thought he could have had it.

Maybe, but that would be the last play I would put on him. That was close to him when tipped. Would have been a hell of a play if he did catch.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
