A lot of teams are running some form of the ZBS. Minnesota does some things with it. Weight doesn't equal strength. Take Steven Hutchinson for example. 6-5 310 or more. Could he play the ZBS? Absolutely because he's got it all. Strength, technique, and quickness.

The Packers have gotten bigger, but are they stronger? Probably not. Barbre is more technique than strength IMO. Guys throw him around way to easy. Colledge too. They got bigger guys inside to get bigger bodies on bodies, but in reality, those guys don't have the power that I think most people are used to seeing.

To be fair, I do believe the interior line of College/Spitz/Sitton could be decent. I think it's the tackles that are bringing down the line.

Which can only bring us to the conclusion that Barbre has played poor, and that Colledge is not a good fit at tackle (especially against Allen Barbre).

How this relates the ZBS to the overall poor quality of the o-line is still a bit foggy to me. You relate a good point about teams that use the zone blocking scheme and are run first -- I just don't see how this relates to our CURRENT problems. Was Barbre a "zone blocking" draft selection? I know Spitz and Colledge, in part, were. And you just said (and for the record I agree) that Colledge/Spitz/Sitton make up a decent interior line. A vast majority of the sacks have come from the tackles. I'm not prepared to stipulate that our o-line woes stem from the zone blocking scheme -- they stem from Barbre being hot garbage [so far] and Colledge playing out of position.

I understand we're all looking for the one big thing that is the problem, and right now it seems apropos to put it on the zone blocking scheme. I just don't think that's the case. Say what you will about it failing in the run game (a contention I also agree with), but its germaneness to the passing game seems ill conceived.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

Why is Campen still employed with the Packers? Giving up 5 sacks to a Lions team that had to use offensive linemen on the defensive line? What did they work on during the bye week?

And ban anyone who says he SHOULDN'T be fired.

He shouldn't be fired ... we should give this guy a fat contract for the next 20 years just to stay away from this team.

If you're painting with a log of shit, don't expect it to look like a masterpiece.

Campen is working with what he has. The question of firing Campen should include all of the following considerations before rash decisions are made:

a) Can we find someone who can perform better than Campen? In the short term? In the long term? At what price?

b) Can a new coach learn our philosophy, or have the authority to introduce a new philosophy, to our offensive line?

c) Are the players the reason for the mistakes or the fact that the coaching is subpar? Could we replace players instead of replace coaches?

"TheEngineer" wrote:

Campen may or may not have good players to work with. But talent level doesn't make you get THREE penalties for lining up in the wrong place. Not to mention the false starts. Absolutely ridiculous. That's not due to the zBS either.
a) Larry Beightol wants to get back into the league.
b) They're getting away from the zBS, they're developing "bigger stronger" olinemen nowadays, getting away from the smaller quicker type. But Mike McCarthy is the one who needs to finally ditch the zBS altogether.
c) Alot of these penalties are mental errors. These guys aren't in the game psychologically. If it was one player or even two, it would be on that player, but this is all of them.

Use th by week to get SOMEONE in here that can friggin BLOCK.

I doubt that will happen. I don't think Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson will be satisfied until Rodgers gets injured and is out for the year.

I know thats not their goal, but it seems they are too damn stubborn to do anything about it.
Unless there just are NO players out there better then what we have.
Hell, check EVERY practice squad in the league and get ANYONE.
They can't be any worse then what we have.

Ted Thompson found a serviceable player in Grant, I'm sure he could pull a serviceable LT or swing tackle out of his posterior.

I agree. Maybe not now (unless they can get Jags in, like, yesterday), but he's got to go.

And if they don't bring some FA tackles in during the bye, you'll be able to find me over with DHazer calling for Thompson's head. This is full-on unacceptable.

That was just embarrassing. And yeah, Aaron held the ball too long in some instances - I'll always take a sack over a pick, and if anyone thinks getting beat to shit game after game doesn't take a toll, you're nuts. This line is now affecting our QB's game. So wrong.

And I'll add that I sincerely hope that Brandon Jackson is healthy after the bye - the OL is utter crap, but Grant's running like a little girl out there.

Before the Queens game, Mike McCarthy was talking about how there are 5 plays per game where the QB has to make plays with his feet.
Now everyone's blaming Rodgers for trying to escape the rush. B.S. I say.

I'd rather see us NOT fire anyone on the OL staff before switching to a Power OL scheme. If we fail at a power OL scheme, then fire his ass.

beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
