Green Bay - In addition to former Cincinnati Bengals LT Levi Jones, the Packers worked out the following players on Monday:
* Cody Balogh, OG, Montana
* Stanley Daniels, OG, Washington
* Ryan Delrosal, OT, Dixie State (Utah)
* Peter Fields, OT, No College
* Isaac Sowells, OT, Indiana
Balogh spent 2008 on the practice squad of the Chicago Bears and then was cut this year on Sept. 5.
Daniels signed as an undrafted free agent with the Rams in 2007, bounced over to the Jets where he was cut in Aug. '07, then he was signed to a futures contract by the Jets and missed the final cut in '08. He was signed to the Jets' practice squad last year and then was released in the 53-man cutdown this season.
Fields, a native of Great Britain, was reportedly supposed to work out for the Packers in August. That may not have happened. He plays for the Odessa Roughnecks, the same team the Packers plucked DT Rodney Allen from last season. Fields is, get this, 6-foot-10 and 335 pounds. He previously worked out for the Miami Dolphins.
Sowells was a fourth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2006. Released this year. Hasn't started a game in the NFL.
That the Packers worked out so many offensive lineman does not mean anything. NFL teams, during the first four to six weeks of the season, routinely work out several players at the same position. Two weeks ago, the Packers worked out quarterbacks and receivers. Next Tuesday it could very well be running backs and linebackers.
Teams are trying to make sure they have enough information on certain players. Teams have emergency depth charts so if a rash of injuries hit at a certain position, they know exactly who they will target and in what order.
These workouts all about making sure the Packers have their ducks in a row. Happens every year with every team and every position.
