So we got two lightning fast safety/CB hybrids to replace what we had. All the other stuff that is factored in...Is our anger so great that we cannot see how this is potentially an extremely good upgrade, with both moves?

Yes, I know all the timing arguments, I know all the arguments regarding what were they thinking when they did a, b, c....

I (personally) like it...all things considered...

a lot.

Wouldn't call Giordano lightning fast. His 40 was only .04 seconds faster thand Rouse. But some of his other combine numbers show some strength.

His notable combine marks include a 345 lb (156 kg) bench press and 19 repetitions at 225 lb (102 kg), 4.02 20 yd shuttle, 4.54 40-yd dash, 33.5 vertical jump, and a 455 lb (206 kg) squat.

Martin was about the same in the 40 at 4.53 But they are both a step above Bigby who was 4.64 I believe.

Looking forward to see both on the field though. Hopeful they will be good contributors.

The obvious caveat is that I need to see these two fast safety/CB hyrids produce on the field - but beyond that, I agree with you. I'm a little mystified about the love for Smith around here - maybe it's because we see so few FAs coming in, and it's extra-disappointing that we didn't keep one? Dunno. Either way, if the guy wasn't assignment-sure, had an attitude problem, wasn't good on ST, that's not someone I want in a backup S spot. Remember, we're talking about a backup - they need to play ST, that's just how it is.

As for Rouse, while I certainly thought he had a chance to be special, it just wasn't happening, and from what I'm reading he's directly tied to 3 huge plays in that Cincy game. Knowledge of the system (recent, mind you - this is nearly as new to our players as it is to any street FA) or not, he just wasn't dependable.

If the new guys are more dependable (see caveat above), then I'm all for having them on the team instead of Smith and Rouse.

And just to be sure I've beaten this dead horse enough, if the O-Line doesn't come to play on Sunday, it won't matter who's playing safety.

According to the article, though, he looked even faster than they thought he was. Functional speed, I guess.

I like that he's that strong, though. Haven't seen a whole lot of him, but I hoep he can tackle as well. I was getting somewhat scared, since we'll pretty much put in another corner-like cover guy, instead of more LB-type of guy. After looking who Benson ran through our LBs and D-line and being in the division with AP, we really need someone who can bring down the runner.

Let's have a combine number fight, lol-- We have fought over everything else. I saw that 4.53 on Martin, but I also saw this.

LINK

Martin had the fastest time in the long shuttle run at 10.69 seconds. The next fastest times were by Alabama's Charlie Peprah (younger brother of former UW linebacker Kwabena Peprah) (10.83) and Michigan State's Eric Smith (10.94).

Martin was one of two players to break four seconds in the short shuttle. His time was 3.95 seconds; the best was by Jason Allen of Tennessee (3.81).

Martin's time in the three-cone drill was 6.72 seconds, third-best in his group and fifth-best among all defensive backs.

His 40-yard dash time was 4.45 seconds, which was among the top 20 times among defensive backs. He said he had to wait two hours to run after warming up, which may have slowed his time.

Also, he was a track star, according to his bio.

I was looking at him (numbers-wise) when everyone was looking at Smith--pre-season-wise-- And comparing him to Smith...who was not only slow in his 40, shuttles etc.... He ran a 40 on a rubber track which should have made him faster or some-such...

40 times discussion notwithstanding, I'll stand by the lightning fast on Martin, because that's what I have read repeatedly from several places.

A little bit on Giordano:

LINK

Giordano is one of the Colts fastest players and in addition to being a leader on special teams, he can play at a high level for a few games if injuries hit in the secondary.

And a fan comment, FWIW---

Im suprised Matt did not get a chance to compete for a starting spot with another team.
Matt has played well when given his chance, behind a stable of Pro-Bowl Safeties.
Thrilled to have him on the roster, and I love the speed and hard hitting he brings to the team.

I find all of that somewhat encouraging. Workin' on that whole glass half-full thing we got goin' on.

Just trying to keep the expectations reasonable. To many times we see a player and read articles that are designed to pump them up. Fans become excited because they are suppose to be fast or something else, and once the helmets are strapped on, it is almost impossible for them to live up to expectations.

I am looking forward to seeing these new guys get on the field and show their stuff, and I will base my opinion of them from what I see.

the known fact of Bigby and Rouse being nicked up before the cuts.

Really?

If true, and Bigby could be PUP'd. I'd rather have him PUP'd and kept that current back with the Rams.

I would not want Woodson playing Safety i think he's more dangerous for us and able to make plays at his current spot, lets see what these new cats can do hopefully they're solid so no more shuffling can be done

Time for Woodson to play some safety.

"Tezzy" wrote:

Since he's been our most consistent run supporter this year, might as well put him at SS and pin his ears back. That could easily factor into the decision processes made recently. Has Mike McCarthy been asked directly about possible connection of Woodson playing safety if Martin or Gio can't step in quick enough?

"TengoJuego" wrote:

I dont think it should be a full time role for Woodson. But I think he should definitely starts taking reps at FS AND SS. In any case of injury, he cant just step right in.

Luxury in this is we have a good corner to fill in with Tramon.
