No No NO!!

It is the VP of officiating that says the legue made an error!!
I do not care about the opinion of someabody named Siefert.

When Pereira makes a proclamation it is the NFL's official position.

The official opinion of the NFL is the final word anddoes not belong in a thread calling the penalty legitimate by someone in no official capacity!!!!!

C'mon dfosterf!!

Why are you for the penalty on Al Harris????

dfost- page 2 :

The VP of NFL in charge of officiating has said:

(As he essentially shrugged his shoulders)

The call was incorrect. (Pack that, you fool Seifert)

The ref was 20 yards downfield when he made the call (With a straight face he used this as justification)

The import of changing the rule to make it less severe of a penalty (discussed
many times in competition committee, he said) would encourage DB's to "take advantage" of the reduced impact of a violation.

____________________________________________________________

I am even more angry about this than I was originally. Seifert and his bullshit is infuriating enough, but when I reflect on how much of a "game changing" and ridiculously poor call this was---we are talking about not only a failure to make a correct call on the WR being off the line of scrimmage...we are also talking about a "free play" for the offense, in addition to the penalty itself.

Our DB's are targeted by the opposition as players designated to "watch"--- by the officials. It all goes to our bump and run history, coupled with Al and to a lesser degree Charles having established a reputation as "muggers" in this league...Rightly or wrongly. The refs have memories, and do listen when opponents and/or coaches point shit out. Then you bring in the moron factor established by Ahmad Carrol, and the crap just descends to a reputation of thuggery by our defensive backfield.

That call disgusts me greatly. Seifert disgusts me even more greatly for having the chutzpah to look at that, start digging in his rulebook, and proclaiming it as legitimate...if that isn't some sad homerism, I don't know what is.

This in the same game where asswipe almost took off Rodgers head in a no-call. Enjoy your vacation, Urlacher.

That crew sucks ass. I'd like to know which crew it was. The NFL can take their explanation letter and go wipe a baby's ass with it, btw.

I find the automatic first down for illegal contact to be a frustrating rule and second on my list of changes after the overtime rule. This should be a reviewable call. If they can review too many players on the field penalties they should be able to review whether you hit someone outside of 5 yards. The only problem would be all the non-calls that occur and perhaps challenges will happen when flags are not thrown.

CaliforniaCheez, you seriously need a lesson in written irony and sarcasm. lol. Also, please enclose future quotes from other websites in

tags, which can be done by typing them or using that handy-dandy little button with the talk bubble on it.

As for the better title of CaliforniaCheez's thread, dfosterf, you actually could have merged the original thread into this one, keeping CaliforniaCheez's title while maintaining the chronological order of posts. I've been known to do that a time or two. 😉

We still taliking about this.

The poster who said that the penalties would be offset and the down replayed has got the rules wrong.

Once Hester lined up off the line leaving the tackle uncovered he cannot go downfield on a passsing play. The formation is illegal.

Once he went downfield he had committed a penalty as inelegible downfield, therefore Al Harris cannot commit a penalty against hester for illegal contact as Hester should not have been in that position for Harris to make the contact.

Has anyone contacted Seifert to get a retraction? LOL.
Maybe, somehow, through Seifert's ignorance he was attempting to bring a spotlight to the issue of these types of calls. Wait, I'm giving him too much credit.

The whole point is that this thread is about something written by a guy named Seifert. Note the title of the thread that the penalty was fully legitimate.

Now the Vice President of the NFL has publicly admitted that the official made a mistake. The NFL's official position is that it was not legit.

Certainly the truth of the matter should be brought out and not buried on page 4 of the thread saying Al Harris deserved the penalty!

Shouldn't truth triumph over error?

Why should this board's official position be that Al Harris deserved the penalty and the official NFL position is not recognized?
