There were probably 125, maybe 150 plays in last night's game, but we cry about 1 5 yard penatly?! No doubt it was a B.S. call, but a driver and jordy drop, barbre, stagnant offense all 2nd half, etc. were all FAR FAR FAR FAR more influential than one measely I.C. call that we're all crying for mass reform over.

Furthermore, that penatly was in the midst of about a 70 yard drive, and happened outside of FG range...so critique why the pack couldn't stop them the other 65 or so yards before you worry about a 5 yard blown call.

Wait a minute! You missed the no call against the Bear's lineman that pulled Kampman to the ground by his face mask, and the fifteen yarder also against the Bears for tripping. and I only watched into the second quarter

Bad calls are at an historic high.

Curious, is there a stat or study that backs that up?

Has the past year of football been filled with more blown calls than in the historical season averages?

I would love to see the numbers.

"chibiabo" wrote:

As has been discussed extensively on this site, that is not an infraction. There is no rule stating that an offensive player cannot grab a defensive player's facemask, which is why we see receivers and running backs doing it almost every game.

this is all well and good in theory, but how are they to determine where the ball was when the player hits the ground etc, or if the tip doesnt cross the threshold, but say the side of the ball does. A lot of flaws yet.

All of these issues have been resolved by engineers. I read an article last year that described a sensor net that would line the inside of the football and provide a three-dimensional rendering of the location of every point on the football in real time. In other words, if any part of the football broke the plane, from any orientation, the computer would know.

What really gets me about calls like the Illegal Contact against Harris, is where the call comes from. The call comes from an official 20 yards down field. I don't honestly believe from 20 yards away, they could tell if I was standing on 4, 5 or 6 yards for the LOS. It is basically a guess where the players are in relation to the LOS.

Plus I also have a problem with the ages of refs in this league. You can be president at 35 but you have to be fuckin 60 years old with glasses to be a ref? Why can't they have athletic people with good vision that can actually keep up with the action on the field calling these games?

The NFL doesn't hire inexperienced officials. You have to work your way up through the ranks, at the bare minimum accumulating some college experience first. This takes a while. Besides, with age typically comes wisdom. Do you really want a bunch of young bucks, still full of spit and vinegar, not to mention passion for "their" team, officiating these games? I'm not saying it might not happen occasionally now, but I'd rather have some older guys out there who have the dispassionate perspective to be fair and impartial than some young guys who might have a hard time resisting temptation.

Another point to consider is that the NFL has the highest physical standards for its officials of any professional sports league. These guys may be old, but most of them can run pretty well. It's rare that you see an officially totally out of the play; I'd say I've seen more officials knocked down in the middle of the fray than left in the dust by a Hail Mary.
