Sure you can call it opening up pandora's box but if it's done right you don't have to worry about it. Like I said the technology is in place to do this. In fact, in the future I could see them putting GPS devices on the tip of each ball and have a threshold mark at the first down marker. If the balls crosses the threshold, first down no questions asked because they'll know if the ball crossed the plane and when.

"djcubez" wrote:

this is all well and good in theory, but how are they to determine where the ball was when the player hits the ground etc, or if the tip doesnt cross the threshold, but say the side of the ball does. A lot of flaws yet.

I would like to see something done about calls. There are some that are just to bad to let go. Somehow use the replay to make sure the correct call is made. No, coaches calling for penalty reviews, but the booth should be able to call down and say, hey, you go that one wrong, before the next play.

If the network can replay 5 times between snaps, so can the booth.

Here is the rub IMO, where do you draw the line?

On a majority of the plays in this league, some type of infraction could be called.. holding being first and foremost.

Do you say, only review the called penalties? Then what about the missed calls? If you include the missed calls, then you are opening up Pandora's box...

Crews get reviews weekly by the head of NFL officiating.. probably with fines for excessive or horrendously blown calls..

But missed or bad calls are part of the game.. like it or not.

But pre-snap fouls to be missed.. that is sad.

The box is and has been opened already. Teams can review 12 men on the field like last night.

I agree, there is usually a penalty in every play. Holding, hands to the face in the line. I would only review when a flag is thrown, and the guy with the TV, sees the play and says, OMG that was a terrible call, do something about it. In most cases, it is a judgement call, and I would be the first to tell you, that I understand why a PI call or hold was called.

But in situations like last night, any many others over the years, could have been corrected.

i just wish we had a "you fuckin' serious?!" rule which plays somewhere between the old days of play reviewing and a "challenge." something where McCarthy (any coach) could say "you fuckin' serious?!" and the review booth looks it over for a second opinion. each coach get's 1 "you fuckin' serious?!" call per half, like challenge...but it doesn't cost a time-out, nor is it scrutinized for 5-10 minutes.

just a simple "wait a fucking minute, broseph. are you trying to tell me something happened which we both know didn't happen? let's let a third party decide."

seriously. we need this.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

I would be okay with the coaches challenge type setup.. but to have a set team to review each and every play.. I think that would spiral into headaches of larger proportions.

If the 12 men on the field can be challenged for illegal substitution, I would think the illegal formation would be able to be called as well. Anyone have the specific letters of the rule?

For me it would have to be only something that is black and white. Like the 12 men. Illegal formation and Illegal contact would fall into that.

Cannot chuck outside of 5 yards. It is pretty easy to see where 5 yards from the LOS is, Or if a player is lined up off the line when he needs to be on it. WR can already ask the side judge if they are on the ball or not.

Things that are judgement would be out, holding, PI and such. And only to confirm or overrule a call made on the field. Not looking for something else, because there will always be something to find.

I don't see why all penalties can't be assessed under the current challenge system - the game won't take any longer because you would still only have two challenges.

Bad calls are at an historic high, many calls in the Super Bowl is what gave the Steelers the game and against the Bears I saw three calls that weren't made in just the first half and would have been 2 against the bears and one against Gb. The most egregious one was a face mask take down against a rushing line man by the Bears. It's one of the things that, for me, has made watching a game tiresome. Hours of non-football action makes it tedious to watch. Oh well! Guess the money changers are happy.

Well I think if there was a penalty, you should be able to look at that after and review it to see if it did in fact happen. However, if nothing was called, I don't agree that you should be able to say "hey there was a penalty on that play." That's what the refs are there for. I'm not saying refs shouldn't be used anymore, I'm saying they make the calls, and a review booth checks them over after to make sure they made them right, and if they didn't the penalty would be withdrawn. That simple. So in the instance of last night, Al Harris penalty would have been withdrawn but they wouldn't add the penalty they missed of illegal formation.

Plus I also have a problem with the ages of refs in this league. You can be president at 35 but you have to be fuckin 60 years old with glasses to be a ref? Why can't they have athletic people with good vision that can actually keep up with the action on the field calling these games?

bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
    Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (23-Dec) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (23-Dec) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?

    Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm

Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
    packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
    Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (23-Dec) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (23-Dec) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (23-Dec) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
