Brett Favre is now listed as an Active Player on nfl.com. Funny, only yesterday morning he was an Historical Player.

He had his best statistical season in 2007

I hear this argument a lot and I don't understand it. In only two categories -- completion percentage and yards per completion -- did Favre have his best statistical season in 2007. It wasn't his best season for passing yardage (1995), passing touchdowns (1996), interceptions (1995), sacks (2004), passing rating (1995), or rushing (1995).

It was certainly an impressive season for him, but it was by no means his best, either statistically or otherwise.

I'll readily admit that a) I'm no stat hound and b) I was parroting something I'd heard several times, as you mentioned.

At any rate, the point I was clumsily trying to make is that the best year he'd had in some time (including last year in NY) followed an off-season during which he busted his ass to prepare. He's been quite forthright that the preparation is the main thing he's no longer interested in.

IMO, without that preparation, he's more likely to break down mid-season (or get hurt because his conditioning isn't what it should be) than he is to lead the Vikes to the Super Bowl.

I don't think you made that point clumsily. It came through loud and clear, and I agree with it wholeheartedly. I apologize for not crediting your point earlier. I tend to tackle only one topic at a time, often to the detriment of my manners.

I guess what confuses me (and lots of people like my Vikings-fan wife) is why anyone's so convinced that adding him to the Vikes makes them Super Bowl contenders (or moreso than they would have been). I don't get how this is anything but a desperate effort by "Chilly" to save his job and by the Wilfs to see if they can squeeze enough goodwill out of Minnesotans that they'll pony up for a new stadium. It has "last ditch" written all over it.

Which isn't to say it can't work. God knows the man's been lucky before. But the willful ignorance of the numerous ways this could go very, very wrong surprises me a little.

This is how it works.

2008 Division Champions with Gus Frerotte/Tarvaris Jackson

2009 NFC Champions with a HOF QB that actually knows what he is doing.

Make sense yet?
