pretty reasonable. He must be confident that he'll kick ass this year and earn a big contract next year. sounds good to me!

I'm not surprised that it's one year, in fact it makes perfect sense. Let's see how Tramon performs in the 3 - 4 before we break the bank on him. I think he's more suited for the 3 - 4 zone predicated defense than the bump press coverage than Al Harris.

I hope jennings is next, then collins.

Jennings 6 yr / 42 mill .. well deserved

Collins 3 yr / 19 mill .. well deserved THIS season

Agreed on Jennings, but I'd like to wait and see if Collins can produce two years in a row before giving him the money. At least wait until the middle of the season like with Rodgers.

Cheap for Williams. I wonder since GB probably is assuming next year is uncapped they gave him a one year deal thinking he'd be a RFA instead of an UFA. I'm not 100% positive on the rules, but I know you need six years of service in the NFL to become a UFA in an uncapped season. Might by why GB isn't negotiating hardcore with the likes of Jennings and Collins.

$1.275 million total is pretty good for Williams. A deserved raise, but doesn't put the Packers in cap hell either. Plus we still control his rights next season when he becomes a RFA. I thought he would want to push for something a bit more along the lines of what Jarrett Bush got, but I'm just glad we got him signed since he was pretty much the only outstanding holdout that wasn't still under contract.

Heard a interesting detail to the parameters of the deal signed yesterday on the Wisconsin Radio report this morning coming into work..

Per the contract, the Packers gave up their rights to Williams after this season as part of the deal, basically making him UFA after the season... so either it was an error on their part or the Papers have not read the fine print of the contract...

I read through the CBA this morning quick, it appears that the Packers can legally do that, release Williams from his restricted rights, if they choose to.. basically an outright release..

If this proved to be the case, this makes a ton of sense for both sides, if he plays up to his potential, Williams has the leverage. If he doesn't, the Packers are protected in a one year deal.. puts the pressure on the Packers to lock him up this season if he is excelling.. thus giving Ted the ability to tie up the money in this years cap... smart fair way to handle it.

This is exactly what I assume as well. It really isn't the emergency to get these guys re-signed that certain members of this board indicate it is.

The downside to an arrangement like this, of course, is that, absent a midseason signing, it virtually guarantees that Williams will not return next year, since the likelihood is that another team would swoop in with a much sweeter deal in an uncapped year.

Of course, I may well be overestimating Williams' market value (as might Williams himself), and it's possible that few other teams would express much interest in him.

It's all a chess game, and I'm curious to see how it plays out.

It virtually guarantee's he won't be back with the Packers next year? How in the sam hell do you come up with this stuff? If he does well in the 3 - 4 and the Packers want him and he wants to be a Packer, he will be. You don't think Tramon remembers getting released by the Texans as a undrafted rookie and the Packers took a small chance on him?

Tramon is in a short line to becoming a starter for a up and coming team with a defense that has some awesome potential and the offense is flat out devastating. Keep this in mind, Woodson and Harris can not play forever.

By no means once so ever does this contract mean Tramon will not be back. His play and the development of the other secondary and special teamers play far more a role in that than some one year deal.

I said that "absent a midseason signing" it would guarantee that he wouldn't be back, the assumption being, of course, that another team would offer him significantly more. According to the articles posted above, this contract gives Williams what amounts to an outright release after this season, which would allow him to test the free-agent market. If Ted Thompson gives him a few games to show his worth in the new scheme and then offers him a long-term deal, we would see Williams back next year.
