I still can't believe people really wanted to spend the 9 pick on a WR... Our run defense was terrible last year and some think the best DT in college wasnt a good idea? SHeesh

Agreed.

I would have been pissed had we drafted Crabtree. Granted, I hope he does tear it up in SF because most of my football following friends here are Niner fans and they're cool people, but the upgrade would have been minimal.

The simple fact is that our run defense is terrible (27th in the NFL, that is a FACT, not opinion). When I'm an opposing Coach and I see the team I'm playing against can't stop the run...

I dont know whom were the best DTs in the draft ... but I'm sure Ted could of done something like this in the draft and we would of been fine or perhaps better then we are at now.

1 - crabtree
2 - clint sintim
both 3 picks on DTs
and then even keep the rest of the draft as it is ... and if worried about the Dline still use the FA ...

IMO we could of done fine with picking crabtree and looking for some DTs later.

back to the present - We did pick up some possible good FAs via the rookie try outs and these guys sound quite intriguing (like jennings college teammate). Also I think we picked up at least 1 heavy DE.

I'm hoping Ted and the scouts picked the right guy at 9; either way IMO our D coaches are the thing that will make our D shine this next few years; not necessarily the players.

Since this thread has strayed so far from the spirit of its title, I think it's only fair to the OP that I split it up into its constituent parts.

Philosophy A. Go after Free Agency and constantly try to improve your team immediately by bringing in established players. Pro: Players are proven. Con: No cohesiveness, higher price tag short term.

Philosophy B. Build your team through the draft and maintain competition in camp. Allow the team to grow as a unit. Pro: Cohesive team who knows each other. Con: Nothing is proven until they grow and develop.

You can supplement these philosophies with the other, but only to a point. Big FA price tags will create dissent among the players who develop into quality starters and want a nice contract extension, and will raise their demands as well, so that they at least get as much as your big FA signings.

I'll tell you what pisses me off about some of the fans around here.

This team began making it's way back in the second half of '06 followed by a great year in '07 with all this coming from the youngest team in the NFL.

We hit a blip on the screen in '08 losing a franchise history record number of games in the last minutes of games and some people want heads to roll and Ted's an idiot and McCarthy can't coach.

I say bullcrap. It's all about handling adversity and sticking to the plan and all I can say is I am certain that there will be forty five guys on our sidelines on opening night feeling just like Arod put it. "These guys don't belong on the same field as us."

Our defense played the balance of last season with one arm tied around their back after Jenkins went down and KGB became a no-show. Is that all it takes for people to bail? The sky is falling now?

I say it's no step for a stepper.

We have brought in a new defensive staff that has proven they can get guys to play at a higher level. We get some talented defenders back in Barnett and Jenkins and have added some more into the mix and people want to bitch because we didn't get a third round pick?

Whatever.

"SB"? We probably won't even win the North." Whatever. We were one missed and one blocked FG from going undefeated in the North last year and we kicked everybody's butt the other four.

Bet against them if you want. I choose not. This is going to be a good football team we put out there against Chicago opening night.

Dulak, You may well be correct in your draft choices. I am not so sure that it would have worked out for GB. Choosing Sintim would have been fine for the most part. He is a little heavier than Matthews which would work well if/when they have him put a hand down on the LOS and go against an OT. Matthews is quicker and a little more agile (Matthews 4.67 to Sintim 4.82 in the 40. 6.9 vs 7.37 in the 3 cone drill. Matthews 35" vertical to 34.5. Broad jump 121 vs 119. The numbers are all close but a slight edge to Matthews.) which works out well when he will have to cover a RB or TE. How many times did an opponent go across the middle against GB's LBs last year? Maddening.

To say GB would be just as well off with another (or two) DT from the 3rd round is not correct. This was considered to be a shallow draft by many experts. (Not necessarily just media types. Also by NFL personnel as well.) Below is the list of all DT drafted. The "grades" are the ones posted on ESPN. They may be right, I don't know. I am just using them as a yardstick. With a 96, Raji would seem to be a player who can step in and play immediately. With the sad performance out of the DL last year I would think that is important. He is versital enough to play all the posiitions on the DL. Also important in the 3-4.
Some of the other players are probably better suited for the 4-3. The best of the lot looks to be Irvin but he is considered to be 'raw" and Miller but he is a "limited athlete". Others are "One trick pony", ""inconsistent", "not explosive". Maybe you would have wanted to draft Sammy Hill out of Stillman? They all could be stars one day. I am glad GB won't have to wait a few years to shut down the middle of their defense.
