I watched Sintim film during Senior Bowl workouts. He couldn't guard ME in open space. EVERYBODY went around him or past him like he wasn't there.

Forget what he ran around the damn cones in.

The guy can do one thing and that's rush the passer and that's why he was there when he was. You think Poppinga was a liability in coverage? Just wait to see this guy.

R.P. started a great thread, in spite of several derailments.

I want to speak a moment of who I am proud of in this forum...proud...Fricken proud.

Several months ago, one of our fellow members rendered his opinion that we should draft B.J. Raji with our first pick in this draft. He was excited about Raji's skill set and his performance in the 2008 season.

I called him on it. I felt at the time that Raji was being over-hyped due to the "need" aspect of the position he plays, etc. I threw out a couple of alternatives for a DT, and noted that Raji was (at that time) rated about 50th on the big board I followed.

He could have called me crazy, and perhaps if I was in his position I might have done so, as I get quite passionate about my stances. He did not..he simply asked me several follow up questions as to why I was taking the stance that I did. I very much respected the fact that he was interested in a discussion, not in being right.

Chronologically, I'm 53, and he is 14.

Maturity-wise, I am saddened to admit that my young friend is one hell of a lot closer to my age than even I am at times...passion will be my excuse, but it doesn't change things.

So--- Go.pack.go. ---- I hope you get the chance to read this. I like how you roll, sir.

ya I didnt see much film on the guy ... he was listed as having the most sacks in 08 out of any linebacker and about 2-3x as many sacks TFL as matthews ...

ie he probably would of been the best pick at 41 had the packers kept their 2nd round pick. Seeing how the giants picked him up at 45 I assume they saw something in him also.

I agree thou as far as dropping back into coverage sintim wouldnt of been that good as matthews.

... after looking at your list (WPR) I agree the better DTs were gone by the time GB would of picked in the 3rd.

Ron Brace DT Boston College 2 8(40) New England 81
Fili Moala DT USC 2 24(56) Indianapolis 79
Alex Magee DT Purdue 3 3(67) Kansas City 74
Jarron Gilbert DT San Jose State 3 4(68) Chicago 80

all these guys have been rated decently by the scouts and would of been gone by the 3rd.

I personally have liked brace for awhile now; just was worried about some ... was it back issues < IMO he's one of the reasons that raji looked so good.

Brace was sort of an immovable/unmoving rock in the middle. He clogged stuff up while Raji disrupted/blew up the backfield.

The differences between Mathews and Sintim are immense. Sintim will be used only in a situational basis and Mathews has the talent and upside to be a cornerstone ROLB in the 3-4.

Looking at sacks and statistics is fine but you have to go deeper into the numbers and into the number of opportunities. How often was Sintim called on to rush the QB in the defense he played in vs. how often was Mathews given the opportunity?

The ding on Sintim was his only real strength was straight line rushing the QB and from what I saw he had little instinct or ability to change directions or react. NY will use him on obvious passing downs to put another hat on the QB and will be out there X number of plays a game.

Mathews has the ability to be a huge part of the defense and a three down contributor. There's a big difference.

When I 1st heard that Matthews had started only 10 games in college I was a bit puzzled as to why Ted would draft a "special teams player", who had been a walkon in college, in the 1st round. But then I realized
1- how hard Matthews has worked in college to become a better player. (I love that.)
2- A few other players had been walkons their freshman year in college and went on to have solid careers in the NFL. (Paul Coffman comes to mind.)
3- USC is a haven for NFL talent so if Matthews did not play much, it was less a reflection on him than it was the talent level around him, and in front of him in previous seasons. (11 players drafted this year, 5 on Day One. USC has had 26 "5 star" players in the last 4 years. 40 players who were considered to be in the top 10 at their position in the last 4 years.)
4- Matthews can as it has been mentioned play 3 downs so he can play the run, the pass, defend both in short yardage situations. (it is nice to have quality situational players but it is better to have players who can stay out on the field and stay in the flow of the game.)

Haha, thanks!

I don't really know what "turned me on" about Raji, I guess it could have been watching Virginia Tech play against them, and I always got mad that Raji was disrupting our backfield...haha.

Anyway, Thank you for your comments 🙂
