Who cares if Ted Thompson picked him because he played with Clay. He's a great pick at that spot, and fills a need.

i mean ignoring the fact that he only played with him for 1 year.........

I can not imagine that a GM of any professional team would use a # 1 pick based on old family ties of any kind.

Your quote is interesting, because I SWEAR I posted a comment somewhere last night questioning this pick based on Ted Thompson's having played with Clay's father ( I believe I used the term "cronyism").

Now I can't find it.

Is it possible that there is a cheese-nazi out there censoring posts?

If so, a pox on you; censorship of relevant commentary is something I'd expect out of Minnesota. I may be wrong on this, but if I'm not I call on the moderators to re-post my post and open it up to discussion. This ain't Cuba.

I will prequalify that after the fact being that I honestly thought I heard a radio report on this during draft day that Ted Thompson was a team mate of Clay's father. If that is incorrect I apologize and withdraw the request. If that is true however, Ted Thompson has some explaining to to do.

lol, for some reason Ted Thompson must explain why he drafted a 1st round talent that is a perfect fit for our defense and fills an immediate need in the 1st round? Would that make sense to anyone but you?

He traded up for Clay. Which no one else expected to happen, with the possible exception of Al Davis. And, apparently, you.

It might have not been expected, but trading down certainly wasn't what I was expecting. If people paid enough attention they would have read the quote that Thompson traded down the past few years because he needed to ensure enough young depth on the team. It was absolutely not against Ted's philosophy (as many seem to think) because Ted's philosophy IS NOT TO TRADE DOWN AND ACQUIRE MORE DRAFT PICKS, it's to improve the team through the draft long term. Now, his modus operandi the past few years was to re-establish the depth that Sherman had destroyed. From this draft it is plainly evident that Thompson believes we have achieved a satisfactory amount of depth and he targeted two impact players which not only met needs but also were, or near to, the best player available at the time.

Thompson's also mentioned how much he and the team zeroed in on Clay, and ways to get him. He's said how he's confident with the depth not only now but prior to the draft. That's the explanation, and in retrospect, Thompson's actions are quite deliberate and not wholly unjustified.

Awesome analysis, The Engineer. I wish more people would think about Ted Thompson's strategy long term, instead of simply evaluating him on a year-to-year basis. There IS such a thing as vision in sports management.

Really? This site is lousy with Ted-apologists. I'll have to reserve the right to come to my own conclusions.

Oskar, the moderators on this site are extremely evenhanded, far more so than even I would like at times. Point to a single instance in which you weren't allowed to have your say -- I guarantee you won't find it. You aren't being targeted for censorship.

And if in your estimation "this site is lousy," no one is compelling you to visit here. This is a site for Packer fandom, part of which is giving your team the benefit of the doubt until grossly proven otherwise.

Actually that's funny because when I was at the hotel watching the draft and the Pats came up I said to my family that I bet Ted trades up and takes Maualuga. Either way just because it was unexpected does not mean that it didn't make sense, thats the point. It DID make sense. In my world trading up for "a 1st round talent that is a perfect fit for our defense and fills an immediate need in the 1st round" is not grounds for explanation.

I wish more fans could just enjoy the process without getting butthurt about things they can't control and having to complain about everything. Football is supposed to be fun and I feel bad for all the people who can't enjoy the game because they just have to hate on Ted because he doesn't do what they want or trades Brett Favre or whatever stupid reason. If you want to complain and be dramatic maybe you should switch over to politics but please leave football out of it.

An entire thread I created on Crabtree was apparently deleted. It happens. I highly doubt your post was targeted specifically for censorship.

You also have the right to apologize for your false accusations that your post was censored in some way.

A link was provided to your post with 3 or 4 pages to follow, yet you sit here and spew your garbage. Try lifting a finger of effort before falsely accusing the staff here of improper censorship.

But, of course, your not confident enough to offer an apology on any accord in a thread where you have been proven wrong twice, but demand a apology to yourself.

Sometime people that talk highly of themselves disappoint greatly. Good day sir.
