Why is it that I always feel like I have to roll the dice on a questionable fart when I'm out working or doing something, and never when I'm at home? I guess doing it at home removes that sense of adventure. It's just not quite as big of a gamble...

I don't know how any GM could justify paying Peppers $16 million a year, in the sense that doing so would make Peppers the highest-paid player on this roster -- by a long margin. Surely that would skew things strangely.

losing al harris for either of those guys would be a mistake.

What I see as the big problem is Peppers BETTER be good and put us over the top if we sign him. By the time we pay Jennings, Collins, Kampman, etc. and deal with the ones out of the nine we have coming up next year there will be VERY LITTLE room to do much of anything else to improve the team.

This move puts a lot of eggs in one basket in terms of other possible moves that might become necessary depending on how the year goes defensively under Capers.

If we knew for sure the guys we have can get us over the top it would be a different story. I know you can always find a way to sign a player and stay under the cap but that doesn't mean you won't lose the flexibility of having the Cap right to do what is necessary down the road.

A $16 mil salary can take away alot of flexibility and options so like I say he better be darn good and make a lot of guys around him better as well.

I don't think it affects things as much as you might think. Frontload at least one of their contracts this year (maybe even two of them) and next year they wouldn't be taking such a big hit. Structure the other two or so to where they take us close to the cap next year, but not over it and after next year we could be very well back to the same area we are now, or at least sufficiently under the cap.

I guess it's just all a matter of how the contracts would be structured. There's no reason signing one big free agent and having to resign a couple of our own players would restrict us from "improving" the team in the future, especially at the rate Ted Thompson signs free agents. Let's just say if we would have signed a big named free agent in the past two years. Well, by this point or next year, if the contract was structured carefully, their cap hit likely wouldn't be that bad, or at least manageable. It would take careful planning no doubt, but that's what these people get paid for.

This isn't even a post in favor of Peppers necessarily, but I'm just saying that if Ted (or any GM in our position) really wanted a player that would cost as much as Peppers, he or she could get him and resign the players and rookies we need to resign / sign.

Doesn't matter though, I don't expect anything like this to happen this year, and it's likely to be a whole new scenario in the coming years anyway; one where getting a big time free agent will be IMPOSSIBLE instead of just costly.

The question is how do you "front end load" a guy already guaranteed $16 mil this year?
The only way to pull this off is to get him to agree to a lower salary this year and pay over that with some of the room we have right now to count towards next season or seasons. Either he agrees to that or we pump $20 mil on him and use the extra against next year keeping his '10 salary down to "only" #12 mil.

We can only hide so many dollars from this year towards what he's paid down the road. We do have Jennings, Collins,Williams, and, Kampman to deal with out of the current kitty as well.

Next year we have like nine guys to look at and while we may not resign them all every one we want will definately require more money to keep.

All I can say is if we sign this guy don't look for us to be near the top of any available cap dollars list anytime soon. Which, to me means, we better be on top of the NFC wins list.

I doubt whoever trades for Peppers will be paying him 16 million for one year, lol. He will more then likely sign a new contract which will break up the money he is paid according to how the contract is drawn up.

Perhaps he would get a big signing bonus of something close to 16 million, but if that was the case, his cap figure would significantly decrease the very next year.

I'm not expert. But the argument that signing on big time free agent will cause us to lose some of our significant players that we want to keep just isn't totally valid. With the proper management, it could work. Perhaps we wouldn't have close to 30 million in cap room for a couple of years, but I would be willing to be it would only be a couple of years and we would be right back down there again, if we wanted.

I'm not necessarily picking on Ted Thompsons approach, especially when it takes us to a 13-3 record and an NFC Championship game. However, the glaring holes last year and the lack of quality depth at some positions is troubling to me. It would be nice to see Ted Thompson trying to do everything he could do to improve this team. I think adding ONE solid starter via free agency would be more then ok when our defensive line is shaky at best, questions at both offensive tackles, along with a few other questions lingering. I truly believe we have a talented team that can go deep into the playoffs, as long as 1 or 2 or our holes are addressed. I will gladly eat my words if Ted is able to sure up these questions via the draft but it's not an unreasonable concern considering the depth at some our our positions.

Like I said, I still think it's a greater risk going about things Ted's way then adding one solid starter via free agency. But, it's Ted career, not mine. Not my decision. All I can do is hope it works.
