The same reason we are spending millions on AK, Barnett, Hawk and the rest of our defense. Does anyone on our defense have 3-4 experience? I don't see Peppers in Green Bay it's to big of a name for Ted Thompson to actually get.

the packers paid these guys millions of dollars considering they play a 4-3.

@pib

maybe he would be a top-5 pick, but even a top-5 pick don't get a contract half the worth peppers is demanding. i don't know what my hometown has to do with this stuff either 😉

he guaranteed money is $22.5 million.

six years for $51 million.

Thats what the #5 pick in the draft got last year.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I don't know how to explain it, but I think I would rather pay Orakpo to play our OLB spot than Peppers...

And he'll be with us longer than Peppers, and when we are lined up in a 4-3, Orakpo will still be a beast, after all that is what he played in college for the most part.

So we've heard this already and also Joe at PC.com  is saying something similar.

Packers Get
[ul]Julius Peppers
Panthers 59th overall selection[/ul]

Panthers Get
[ul]Brian Brohm
Al Harris
Brady Poppinga
Packers 9th overall selection[/ul]

Also Joe mentions this one which I have not heard prior to this.

Packers Get
[ul] Tony Gonzalez
Chiefs 3rd overall selection[/ul]

Chiefs Get
[ul]Al Harris
Packers 9th overall selection
Packers 9th selection in 3rd round
Packers 19th selection in 3rd round[/ul]

The Panthers rumor is for more plausible than the one with the Chiefs. I don't see anyone in the draft that could be an immediate blockbuster player for us and that is against Ted Thompson methods completely.

What do YOU think about these?

I think Peppers coming to the packers could happen, but there has to be certain things that need to go there way.
1. Packers would give there number one pick (9)
2. Panthers would have to give something in return like a third or fourth round pick back.
3. Packers will give a 2010 second round pick.

Panther really don't have the money for Peppers, there cap money is not the greatest.
Trade scenario - Many things could happen Al Harris is a good one.
Qb, Lb, Plus 1st round pick
When you draft a player who has never played a down in the NFL.
Ted take the trade and get Peppers or Gonzalez. Ted you get a pro bowl player and a leader...

Maybe Ted will wait until after the draft and then give a #1 for Peppers and a #2 for Gonzales. Those picks would be somewhat lower than this year - hopefully. JOT

What I see as the big problem is Peppers BETTER be good and put us over the top if we sign him. By the time we pay Jennings, Collins, Kampman, etc. and deal with the ones out of the nine we have coming up next year there will be VERY LITTLE room to do much of anything else to improve the team.

This move puts a lot of eggs in one basket in terms of other possible moves that might become necessary depending on how the year goes defensively under Capers.

If we knew for sure the guys we have can get us over the top it would be a different story. I know you can always find a way to sign a player and stay under the cap but that doesn't mean you won't lose the flexibility of having the Cap right to do what is necessary down the road.

A $16 mil salary can take away alot of flexibility and options so like I say he better be darn good and make a lot of guys around him better as well.

I don't think it affects things as much as you might think. Frontload at least one of their contracts this year (maybe even two of them) and next year they wouldn't be taking such a big hit. Structure the other two or so to where they take us close to the cap next year, but not over it and after next year we could be very well back to the same area we are now, or at least sufficiently under the cap.

I guess it's just all a matter of how the contracts would be structured. There's no reason signing one big free agent and having to resign a couple of our own players would restrict us from "improving" the team in the future, especially at the rate Ted Thompson signs free agents. Let's just say if we would have signed a big named free agent in the past two years. Well, by this point or next year, if the contract was structured carefully, their cap hit likely wouldn't be that bad, or at least manageable. It would take careful planning no doubt, but that's what these people get paid for.

This isn't even a post in favor of Peppers necessarily, but I'm just saying that if Ted (or any GM in our position) really wanted a player that would cost as much as Peppers, he or she could get him and resign the players and rookies we need to resign / sign.

Doesn't matter though, I don't expect anything like this to happen this year, and it's likely to be a whole new scenario in the coming years anyway; one where getting a big time free agent will be IMPOSSIBLE instead of just costly.

I'm curious as to how crapping yourself could possibly be meant in a good way. Are there situations where crapping oneself is good? I've crapped myself a few times that I can remember, and none of them have been good.
