Per Tom Pelissero, the Packers are expected to re-sign Dillon. Contract details aren’t out yet.

This is very surprising to me. Not sure I really like it unless he’s the #3 behind Jacobs and a rookie. Happy to have him back as a person though.

I am surprised as well.

Maybe styling his game more like Jacobs will help him. He can't be a Jones, but maybe a Jacobs, Jr.

I saw something which suggested it's PROBABLY a one year deal, but that's not a report, I can't tell how serious that is.

But yeah, it seemed like they wanted to replace Dillon... and wanted different style of RBs... and we did the opposite.

Of course, Packers could draft a rookie and have the rookie start as the #3 RB while learning the system.

I wonder how much of this was realizing he pissed off the fans by cutting Jones, so he thought he had to bring back Dillon to make everybody happy again 😂

Probably not the case. Just an interesting theory.

I'm not familiar with this loophole.

https://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2024/3/14/24101303/green-bay-packers-news-aj-dillon-re-sign-contract-details-2024-free-agency-running-back

Interestingly enough, the Packers are apparently going to use a rare cap mechanic to save some cap space with this signing. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the team will be using a four-year qualifying offer on Dillon. What a four-year qualifying offer is designed to do is allow teams to keep hometown favorites around a little longer by permitting teams to spend up to $1.45 million in money that doesn’t count against the salary cap on players who have played at least four consecutive seasons with the team and are re-signing on one-year contracts.

That does mean that Dillon is signing just a one-year contract, though, and not a long-term deal. Knowing that, it’s difficult to imagine that he will be receiving a significant chunk of the team’s 2024 cap space. At this point in time, no further contract details have been announced.

I don't fully know the rules, but some details that seem to be in it based on very little reading.

Looks you need to be
~ On a team for 4 continuous years, no breaks at all, so can't be a street FA nor on another team, I'm uncertain about PS.

~ Possible have your previous contract run out, so not released, but simply the contract ended.

~ Sign a one year deal

~ Basically play for Minimum, PLUS the bonus $1.45

Jones didn't have his contract run up naturally, and he's not playing for just $1.45 over minimum.

Not surprised by this at all. Not a huge market for him and he seems to really like being a Packer. Sounds like he signed a cheap prove-it deal. Bit of an insurance policy with Jones leaving - knows the offense, has been a good backup RB when healthy. Low risk, makes sense on a number of levels.

I know some people don't like him because he was taken in the 2nd round and he's never gonna be Aaron Jones, but he's a good depth player, good character guy.

I assume the Packers still draft a RB or two and Dillion probably isn't a lock to make the team.
