Green Bay Packers craft list of concessions to entice Aaron Rodgers to return at least one more season, sources say

To ensure the return of their reigning NFL MVP quarterback, the Packers now are offering concessions to try to convince Aaron Rodgers to return to Green Bay for at least one more season, per league sources.

Over the past weekend, the two sides were able to reach mutually agreed-upon terms that are close to convincing Rodgers to abandon plans he had to skip training camp and instead return for it.

It is not done yet, and Rodgers still hasn't left California, but both sides are hoping to finalize the agreement shortly, per sources.

The agreement in principle would include an approximation of the following conditions that the two sides now are finalizing to alleviate and address some of Rodgers' issues before the opening of Tuesday's training camp:

* The 2023 year in Rodgers' contract -- the last one in his current deal -- would be voided, with no tags allowed in the future.

* The Packers would agree to review Rodgers' situation at the end of this season.

* Rodgers' contract would be adjusted with no loss of income to give the Packers more cap room now.

* Mechanisms will be put in place to address Rodgers' issues with the team.

The Packers' agreement to "review" the situation after the season implies that the team will trade Rodgers if he still feels the way he has about the Packers' culture and decision-making.

As long as long as the above conditions are met, and the two sides were trying to finalize them before camp opened Tuesday, Rodgers would return for his 17th NFL season, a feat no Packers quarterback, including Bart Starr and Brett Favre, were able to accomplish.

As Rodgers skipped the team's offseason program and the mandatory minicamp, the two sides spent months trying to formulate a scenario that would prevent the reigning NFL MVP from missing training camp and this season and would bring him back to Green Bay for what potentially could be his final season as a Packer.

The two sides continuously have met in person throughout the off-season, with Rodgers' agent David Dunn, being in Green Bay as recently as a week ago for extensive meetings with high-ranking Packers officials that helped lay the groundwork for the framework of this potential breakthrough.

Green Bay conducted these talks as its president Mark Murphy and general manager Brian Gutekunst were preparing to meet shareholders in their annual state of the union at Lambeau Field. During that meeting, Gutekunst told Packers' shareholders on Monday, "We have been working tirelessly with Aaron Rodgers and his reps to resolve the issues he raised this offseason and remain hopeful for a positive outcome."

Ian Rapoport @RapSheet --- The reworked deal for Aaron Rodgers includes him having a say in his future in 2022 and 2023.

I wonder who said that this is what Rodgers wanted way back when this all started?? 🤷‍♂️

Bullshit. Rodgers is using his media buddies to save face.

I think we all hope the drama is close to and end. I will be rooting for him all the way. I hope he has a great year.

But I don't think he will....at least relative to his last year or his other MVP years.
• He is a year older...and more important,
  • I think his mind is elsewhere. I think the checkout has begun and instead of constantly and steadfastly studying game film and tendencies, part of his mind will evaluating his next football home and his physical home with his latest gal pal.
  • I can't say I have done a statistical analysis for correlation, but anecdotally, he seems to have crappy years when there are women actively in his life...maybe the relationships are a distraction him.
I hope I am wrong....and if he is even as close to as good, it is still terrific.
  • If our new DC and other additions can improve our defense enough and if our OLine and receivers can step it up, that may be enough to put us over the hump.
But I think we are seeing the last dance...and that may be the best for all parties involved.

I think it was James Jones or Jon Kuhn made it pretty clear what Rodgers wanted.

    He wanted either
    1) A locked up extension where the Packers couldn't get rid of him, even if they wanted to... so no trade clause and a lot more years on the book.
    OR
    2) To control when he leaves Green Bay, so he can leave the Packers instead of them leaving him.

I don't fully understand this new agreement, but I think it's basically a one year deal.

Followed by an option year by the Packers, where they can either keep Rodgers and get a future comp pick when he leaves in 2023, OR they can trade him in 2022 and hopefully get a lot lot more I'm trade picks.

And this would make sense as far as the past dance basketball pic Rodgers and Adams posted. They think they could both be out of Green Bay in 2022... or at least one of them might not be back.

Aaron can say what he wants, but I bet if we had not drafted Jordan Love then none of this drama would be happening. I didn’t like the pick at all, and still don’t. Maybe Love will make me think otherwise down the road. I hope so anyway.

Rodgers wasn’t looking very good, and the FO had to plan ahead. Look at how many teams spend years trying to find a QB. The Packers drafted Rodgers, and a boatload of fans were saying the same thing about him as you are saying about Love now.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
