Considering cap space for FAs in reality gets spread over multiple years, with the least amount going into the first year, the media really does a shitty job of looking at cap space, as they only look at a single year (and that the year, the least amount of the new contracts are going into)...

They really should look at a larger span, such as a 4 year span, for available cap space.

That being said, with Graham and Linsley making over $8 million each in cash (not cap space, but cash... but the cap space follows the cash, and cash is more important as it dictates the cap) $8 million in cash this year, if they were released the Packers would be caught up to the main pack in terms of cap space for a single year. And if you want you can do Lane Taylor instead of Linsley, though it's $4 million less.

On the other hand he thankfully hit on the 4 FA's along with Jenkins and Savage leaving far fewer holes to fill now.

Gute did a terrific job in FA, but he was 3 for 4 with Turner being a miss. Bill Huber noted

RG BILLY TURNER Cap: $4.25 million (27th among guards) Grade_D_
Season: Gutekunst knocked it out of the park in free agency with the signings of Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith and Adrian Amos. The jury remains out on Turner. Turner, a part-time starter for Miami and Denver, inked an eye-popping four-year, $28 million contract. He’s intelligent and athletic but got beat far too often in the passing game and was overpowered at times in the running game. Of 62 guards to play at least 50 percent of the snaps, he finished 57th in PFF’s pass-protection metric with six sacks, six hits and 45 total pressures. That pressure count was the worst in the league among guards. STATS charged him with 3.5 sacks. Sports Info Solutions charged him with 12 blown blocks in the run game, second-most among all guards. After a low cap hit in 2019, he’ll count a bit more than $8 million the next three years. Maybe he’d be better at tackle.

TheKanataThrilla observed:

I am pretty sure we will have more money than this shortly. I think we will be relieving ourselves of Graham and Taylor's salary. Would not be surprised if Linsley is gone as well and we save that $8M. We dump those guys and we are up over $50M in salary cap space..;..

Given OL starting salaries, I would like to think we could upgrade. Further, who knows what will happen with Bulaga? If we choose not to resign him, they may try to slide Turner out to tackle and get a better guard. I have my doubts on that strategy, but my gut tells me they are considering it. Further, I don't know what our options are on Turner. If we had the option, I would not be surprised to see him gone.

Ok that's true. Corey is about an 8 mill cap hit? A replacement for him of equal or better caliber would be how much?

Wouldn't mind drafting a C and having Patrick as the back-up plan if the rookie needs time to develop. Really interested in what we do at RT. Not sure if Turner would be the answer. Is it easier to play RT over RG? I hope if that is the plan that they at least sign Veldheer as insurance. Do we have somebody to plug at RG? Do you then keep Lane or draft someone? Lots of options, but it does make me nervous.

IMO Taylor is gone....

I enjoy the accountability throughout the organization. Clean lockers are great motivators. Average performance cant be accepted if you want to be an elite, Super Bowl caliber team

It is likely to be a very interesting off season.
