I have always held this thought. After seeing how good teams can be beat on any Sunday (Pats in the Super Bowl) I think my idea is firmly warranted.

What we should expect from our management (this goes for any franchise) is for them to develop and put out a team on Sunday that has the potential to win. A team needs to have good enough players that give them the ability to win. The Packers have that, does anyone disagree? With that being said I, personally, find it hard to find fault in Ted Thompson for the teams recent fall from grace.

Ted Thompson decided in the off season to do what as best for the team's potential over a LONGER period of time. The decision to trade Favre and start Rodgers was a long-run solution. Too many teams use short-term solutions to problems that clearly need a long-term answer. The examples are numerous. We should be happy that we have the management that understands this. Some people might say that Ted Thompson does not take enough risks (Free-Agents), and that opinion also has examples, but there is one thing we all need to understand and appreciate. Ted Thompson has been doing what it takes to develop a team that will be a team with potential for numerous years, not just a flash in the pan.

This is probably way out of order and you may not be able to understand my whole point, but do you understand my basic idea? My posts will get better, just give me time. ;)

Go Packers.

I agree with what you say. I think our team has potential and lots of talent. they're not getting the job done. I want to win now, and i'm very frustrated with our team this year. however, i think our long term future looks very bright.

Dan... agreed.. I put less accountability on Ted for our struggles and more on positional coaches and lack of growth on this team.

We have some of the same player making the same mistakes year 3 as they did in year 1.

That speaks of either the players not there or the positional coaches not getting it out of them.. I know players like Colledge, Spitz, Poppinga, Barnett, Hawk, Jolly, Pickett, Lee can do it.. I have seen them do it.. consistently getting it out of them.. not so much.

But overall.. I like the window that will be open on this team for another couple years.. CB might need some stocking and a few holes talent wise beefed up.

I look forward to seeing the adjustments this team makes this offseason.

I got smeared on another board for saying the exact same thing.

Since I find you IN order, I'm gonna +1 you for an excellent post.

Frankly, some of his moves reflect titanium gonads, including the non-retention of a certain QB...

Some of his moves obviously have sucked, but I certainly have understood the rationale behind those moves. I just wish he would blink once in awhile... Jerry Seinfeld would definitely classify Ted as a "non-blinker".

I have been less than impressed so far. In 4 years we have won one playoff game and are 30-30. If we don't go on a run and somehow sneak into the playoffs this year, then he's not going to have much to show for after 4 seasons.

I understand the numbers are less than impressive. but you cant have stats without circumstances and I think you are ignoring the circumstances completely. New England, Pittsburgh... teams that are consistently good these days, have been at it awhile with not many major events pulling them down. Ted got a team that was in shambles, made moves to fix it and then came the Favre fiasco. In my opinion, no one else this side Ron Wolf could have this team at 30-30 over these 4 years under these circumstances.

I think most other GM's in this situation would have worse records.

Would we have had the Favre Fiasco without Ted in charge?

Would we have the same team makeup?

I am not one to buy into the no other GM could have managed a .500 record through the past 4 years.. the variables would have been so different and some things might not have come to pass.

Like.. would another GM have gone the route of all youth and little in FA?

Or would he have reworked contracts to keep Wahle for example?

This is not pinning anything on him, just I don't think that argument is valid.

Something like.. what if the Packers had drafted Barry Sanders? Would Brett and the 96 team ever developed, would have Braatz been shown the door and Wolf injected...

What ifs.. all you can do is look at the record and what has taken place on his watch... because with somebody else, the events would have transpired differently.

Somethings Ted had a equal part in creating.. so he has to be accountable for the results as well.

But if you mistake that for me complaining about Ted. not even close.. we have a deep talented team for the most part.. it is extracting the talent that we are struggling with currently.

I tell you what I expect this weekend.

A hungry team, focused and serious at the task at hand.

Anything less and I will be thoroughly disappointed.

:whipitgood: Up to this point I supported Herr Thompson. Now I'm a bit disconcerted. We have a defenseless "D" line. We have the bust, Harrell which he apparently wasted a first rd. on, we have the punter change and as I recall TT's early statement, he was supposed to be a more consistent punter then Ryan. NOT! We have Hawk who hasn't lived up to expectations and an offensive line that still is un-organized. Early on I posted a probable 8 and 8 which now begins to look rather optomistic. Mc Carthy hasn't been the greatest play selector either. Guess it's time to start planning on 2009 season and hopefully a draft that will shore up some of the major deficiencies this team has. Do we have adequate replacements for Woodson and Harris? Think it may be time for Thompson to spring for some real defensive tackles first; that can harass opposing QB's. Our present defense allows way too much time for the opposing QB to launch bombs.
If this team were as good as early statements by the Packer's coaches and GM they would certainly not be where they are.

Mucky Tundra (56m) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (1h) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (1h) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.

Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I assumed that both guys will get paid, just a matter of when or how we get there
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : the Synder years or do they take care of one of their own?
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Do the Commanders risk losing a top WR with an emerging QB just because he's turning 30 and potentially risk damaging the rebuild from
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Turns 30 this September, plays at a high level and Washington has some cap space I believe
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : More interesting is Washington with Terry McLaurin
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I would imagine Dallas will resolve this issue with a truckload of money
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : Micah pulling a Myles with trade request
