So Jimmy Graham didn't live up to the contract? Sure, I get it. He played like an average TE last year while being paid like an elite one.

Where I get lost is people who don't think he's worth any contract whatsoever, and want to take a 12 million dead money hit just to release them. I guess so they can say "I told you so!" or something. What is the point of this? What possibly argument is there that justifies the Packers eating 12 million in cap space to NOT have Jimmy Graham on the team?

Just doesn't seem like the amount of space that would really improve the team. Especially when you look at what we have behind Graham on the roster at TE.

At worst we'll have an average tight end who can mentor our draft pick (can't imagine us not picking one in this draft class) and be of pretty good use in the red-zone. Something I don't know if MVS, Moore and Brown can do better, even if Jimmy is at even 50% of his former self.

After that you can cut your losses, take the small dead cap for 2020 and invest the money somewhere else.

Gutey cut Nick Perry resulting in 11.1mil in dead money for this year.
The difference between Perry and Graham?

That would be who signed each player.

By the beginning of next year I don't see too many players drafted before 2017 being left on the roster.

Gutey is doing what new GM's do.

I'm not as naive as to think new regimes don't prefer their own players, but I do think Gute has the teams best interest in mind, rather than just doing what his own ego tells him to do. This move (and non-move) just makes a lot of sense in other ways than gut feelings and emotional reactions.

I was listening to the people on here when Graham was signed. Many said he was over the hill. Me, I hadn’t really followed his career, so I was hoping the people were wrong.
I hoped that he had a lot left. So far, he has been average at best.
I’m hoping he does better this year.
Maybe the influx of young guys will help revitalize him.

I didn't.
I'm just showing that Gutey is doing what most GM's do.
Ted Thompson did the same thing back in 2005 and 2006.
He dumped high priced veterans. started building through the draft and then after the 2005 season he brought in Mike and signed veteran FA's to patch holes.
Ryan Picket, M.Manual, Klem, there was a LB, and of course that CB from Oakland who everyone else said was past his prime, Charles Woodson.

Funny Manual was signed to a 3 yr 10mil contract, but Ted dumped him after 1 year because he lost his starting job to Atari Bigby.

The similarities are many.

Gutey learned well from Ted.

The dead cap hit, is just taking all the current dead cap space and putting it into the current year.

But it's not creating more dead cap, it's just adjusting which years it's in....

And if teams have long term player signed that they're willing to guaranteed more money to (as teams often do with their franchise player) they can easily reverse these effects just like the Packers did over and over again with Favre under Sherman. (and many teams have with a franchise player).

So from the muliple year perspective, the dead cap hit is nothing but an accounting adjustment which can be easily reversed.

Cap hits are scary if looking from the current single year perspective, but what the cap hit takes away in this year, it open in future years and therefore all balance out and basically is a non-factors (unless you don't know how to do an accounting adjustment, which all 32 teams do).

Buckeye, I don’t think people thought Charles Woodson was past his prime, more that he was a malcontent that wasn’t worth the trouble he would cause in the locker room.
One thing that I think straightened him out was that he saw how teams shied away from him for that very reason.
Green Bay was the only team that would even give him a chance.

Took about a week for him and Mike to have it out, after Mike told him to leave practice.
Mike convinved him Green Bay was the place he needed to be.
He went from malcontent to the absolute #1 leader and face of The Packers.
The rest as they say is history.

Jimmy was on pace for all time team catches by a TE, but he broke his thumb. He may not have that old WR speed, but I think Lefleur can get production from him.

Anyway, another factor that comes into play is not just the cap hit, but the roster spot. I guess Perry wasn't worth that.
