Picking up good free agents can really make a difference. Look at the 1996 super bowl team. Reggie White, Santana Dotson, Jackson, Rison, Desmond Howard, all made major impacts. And I bet I’m not even naming all of them. You have to be willing to spend to get the really good players.
Not the “over the hill has been”, but ones that really have a shot at being great.
Letting Cook go and signing an over the hill Graham saved money, but hurt the team big time.
If you are satisfied with mediocre, that’s fine. But if you want championship winning, it won’t fly.

The thinking was apparently, that given enough supplemental draft picks, plus UDFA's, with awesome scouting and player selection, you didn't need FA's....and when you have either not so awesome scouting or poor player selection....the rest is history.

Packer History suggests that the addition of key FA's is what is necessary to supplement an imperfect draft outcome. When a team doesn't participate meaningfully in FA, its chances of getting to the top are de minimis.

Which the entire NFL (as a whole) has seemingly gone more towards that Thompson model ... getting younger, less expensive players, because the cap limit is a problem (this also hurts more complex schemes (such as MM's) which need players together longer to form chemistry and read and all be on the same page. But back to the NFL getting younger...

According to research by the Associated Press, the average NFL roster is getting younger, which means older players (who earn more money) are having a harder time finding and keeping jobs.

The study showed that the average experience of a player on an NFL opening-day rosters was 4.6 years in 2005, and was 4.3 this year.

In 2005, there were 784 players with three years of experience or less and 714 with five or more years. This season, there were 852 of the younger ones and 644 of the older ones.

Effectively, that points to the shrinking middle class in the NFL, as teams increasingly choose to pay a few stars, and fill in the roster with cheaper alternatives than guys who have been around.

“You don’t really have a lot of middle-class older guys. It’s actually kind of sad,” Lions safety Glover Quin said.

This post is pretty ironic, because you're complaining about the Packers not willing to spend money to get really good players and TEs, when actually the Packers did spend money pretty good money in attempts to get really good TEs.

Also you're mistaken about the saving money part... it actually cost more money. Cook contract was cheaper than Bennett and Graham contract.

So you're complaining about what the Packers did, suggesting it leads to mediocre, but at the very same time, promoting exactly what the Packers did, hinting that it'll lead to championship winning...

Ok Beast. How about-maybe having people that are better at deciding if a player is still good, and not a huge waste of money?
Many people on this site said they thought Graham was done, not anywhere near what he once was. Yet the “big wigs” in Green Bay thought he was worth big bucks. Yet Cook, who had proved his worth was was allowed to walk.
So obviously money is not the point, but ability by your guys to be better at SPENDING said money. To be better at judging talent, and not waiting until the best FA’s are already signed by other teams. Not being afraid to jump in and grab some players that can really matter to your team.
There.....is that better?

But the Packers might of been willing to sign Cook to $5.5 million, but his (or his agents) demands were higher...

So the Packers did exactly what you said... they didn't wait until the best FA TE (in their grades) signed by another team, and we're not being afraid to jump in and sign Bennett and letting Cook and his equally high contract demands go.

Clearly in hindsight that was a HUGE mistake... but at the time, it seemed like they had an upgrade. And Cook had to settle for an amount that the Packers might of agreed to, but at the time they weren't.

And Tony Romo (who seems to be right about a lot of stuff) thought Graham would be huge for the Packers... and I think he was on pace for close to 1,000 yards before his knee injury.

Speaking of Bennett: Marcesdes Lewis was on Bennett's talk show... and Bennett said McCarthy's offense was the worst offense for TEs, and Lewis followed in agreement saying "no question" (about that). Bennett's reasoning was that the TEs don't run the seam, deep 7 nor deep over routes in MM's offense, which are very successful for TEs in other offenses. Also Rodgers likes to throw to the outside, and avoids the middle more. But they also talk about Rodgers throwing.

Here for video of Lewis/Bennett (warning there is cussing)

I still think Howard Green was one of the best 2010 free agent pickups. If it wasn't for his push in XLV, Ben doesn't lob an easy pick six for Nick Collins. Okay, the interception was easy, the return was magical.

beast (7h) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (7h) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (12h) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (12h) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (13h) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (13h) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (13h) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.

Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder

beast (2-Aug) : I believe it's technically against the CBA rules, but Jerry just calls it a simple unofficial chat... and somehow gets away with it.
beast (2-Aug) : Jerry Jones is infamous for ̶n̶e̶g̶o̶t̶i̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ chatting with players one on one... and going around the agent.
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I assumed that both guys will get paid, just a matter of when or how we get there
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : the Synder years or do they take care of one of their own?
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Do the Commanders risk losing a top WR with an emerging QB just because he's turning 30 and potentially risk damaging the rebuild from
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Turns 30 this September, plays at a high level and Washington has some cap space I believe
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : More interesting is Washington with Terry McLaurin
