Free agents are higher financial risks. But if you are going after the BEST, PROVEN free agents, you have a better chance of getting a good deal then dishing out money to draft picks that might get you NOTHING for your money.
Look at how many draft picks Ted made, that maybe would have been good players if they had not already been hurt when he picked them. He always tried to get broken players that WOULD have been graded very high, but had injury problems already.
Kind of like buying a big screen TV for a cheaper price, that you know was dropped off a truck with the box it's in badly damaged, and taking a chance that the TV inside isn't smashed that badly.

Unfortunately, Ted's TV's were all smashed.

I'd rather get a proven VETERAN, who can immediately step in and play well.

Or perhaps it was Ball pinching nickles, I guess we'll see.

This thread is about how poorly GB did at forming the 2017 Packers. Yet how many of you were "Gung Ho" over the team as the 2017 Season began ? Ready to defend the GM on all fronts.
Not willing to suffer a critical comment posted as a sincere real fact.

I told you so !

Only after Rodgers went down did Thompsons Packers reveal the truth about itself. The weakness' that only recently began to be addressed. I am reserving critical post on the "new" 2018 Packers until I see something worthy of a deserving comment.

They know exactly how much cap space is available and which teams will go after their man.

GB is not in a bad place cap wise but has about half the amount available as the teams with the most cap room. If they are going to compete for the best and proven FA's out there they will essentially have to pay what OTHER teams can afford. Not necessarily what they can afford.

Some NFL players have their roots in small towns/the country and are more comfortable playing for smaller market teams. Larger market teams like Chicago, New York, or Los Angles do not have the appeal for them that a GB or Buffalo or Kansas City or Charlotte has. They pay them well without their having to deal with the pressures of the larger markets. This is not true for all, but it's true for some.

Too bad Ted didn't stick to his guns.

GB may not have a Robert Kraft, but could also build a SB winning team without exceeding the League Salary Cap. Also, very few exceed the cap as the fine for doing so is not small.

IMO, GB's last GM reminded me of the fellow who did not play poker to win or to loose, but was happy to finish with what he started with. Perhaps the New GM will have the courage to make trades and occasionally grab for the brass ring. A fresh new direction is, IMO, just what has been needed in GB.

Zero2Cool (23h) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.

Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : The spotting of the ball IS the issue. Not the chain gang.
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Will there be a tracker on the ball or something?
Zero2Cool (1-Apr) : uh oh
Martha Careful (1-Apr) : Too bad camera's can't spot the ball as well.
Mucky Tundra (1-Apr) : So will the chain gang be gone completely or will they still be around as a backup or whatever?
Zero2Cool (1-Apr) : The method for measuring first downs in the NFL will switch from chain gangs to camera-based technology in 2025, the league announced.
Martha Careful (1-Apr) : A big step in the right direction. Just put in the college system is very very good.
Zero2Cool (1-Apr) : NFL has passed a rule that allows both teams to possess the ball in OT during the regular season
Zero2Cool (1-Apr) : Touchbacks on kickoffs will now bring the ball to the 35-yard line.
beast (31-Mar) : It might of gotten more popular recently, but braiding hair (even men) in certain cultures goes back for centuries.
Martha Careful (30-Mar) : Is men braiding their hair a new style thing? Watching the NCAA men's tournament many players have done
