Mike Pereira blasts latest replay reversal

It’s become more clear and more obvious that the “clear and obvious” standard for replay review is being ignored.
=================================
“[I] don’t see how the Buffalo TD was overturned,” Pereira initially said on Twittter. “Not clear and obvious the toe didn’t drag. There is a line behind the toe when he drags it. Am I missing something?”

=================================

“[R]egarding the Buffalo no touchdown,” Pereira said in a separate tweet, “nothing more irritating to an official than to make a great call and then someone in a suit in an office in New York incorrectly reverses it.”
=================================
And then this: “It is more and more obvious that there isn’t a standard for staying with the call on the field.”

Pereira is right. Apart from the fact that Riveron has overturned multiple calls this year without regard to the supposedly high “clear and obvious” standard, Riveron rarely if ever mentions the “clear and obvious” standard when explaining the decision to overturn these rulings.

This article is dead on the money, I can no longer predict NFL reviews outcomes because the NFL doesn't have a set standard.... it's just what one guy in NYC thinks or doesn't think... and quite frankly it's complete BULLSHIT!

There clearly hasn't been enough proof to over rule something, and then the NYC review people over rule it anyways, just because what they think happened. If you think it, then find it of video tape OR don't change the call!

I thought about this when watching the ATL @ PHI game yesterday. While the overturned plays actually seemed like good calls in this game, the amount of video replays slowed the game down so much.

Football is one of the slowest games as is and watching a team other than the Packers sometimes feels like a chore because of all the commercials and stoppages, but adding in an additional 4-5 video reviews per game makes watching them almost unbearable.

The NFL review system needs tweaking. The college system is much better and generally quicker and more accurate. We have moved beyond the psychological aspect of the crew on the field having final authority over the calls. The NFL should have a crew in the booth to quickly:
- review scoring plays
- review turnovers
- review challenges
- review plays in the last two minutes of the half and overtime

Not that it ultimately would have mattered, but I thought Tennessee got the short end of the stick on two key calls. Kudos to Tono Romo for pointing that out.

Charge 20% more for the exclusivity and the game will flow better.

Add KRK's suggestions for review and the game will gain momentum once again.

It would be difficult to legislate away from all the sub packages but if an offense would stay with the same 11 players the refs would wind the clock quicker. As it is if they see one player run on to the field for the offense they will stand over the ball until the defense has a chance to substitute as well.

This could explain why the NFL wasn't following the official rulebook... because the head of the refs has a different rulebook.

And I'll say that they stopped following the official rulebook before the playoffs, though this article is only about the Super Bowl

NFL owners didn’t vote on a new catch rule until Tuesday when it passed unanimously. But, according to ESPN, the league applied the new rule — even though it wasn’t a rule then — in Super Bowl LII.

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio said a conversation with Al Riveron, the NFL’s senior vice president of officiating, indicated it was “clear” the rule already was in place for replay rulings on touchdown catches by Zach Ertz and Corey Clement.
