You're referring to my guy, Jim Harbaugh. Hmmm. You do realize he wasn't fired for lack of performance, right? A similar situation to why we shipped Brett to the Jets. Harbaugh didn't get along with the management. He didn't kiss their butts like they wanted him to...he wanted to win. That is not remotely the same thing as the mindset behind what Elway did. Elway fired Fox because he wanted to get over the hump. That had nothing to do with why York fired Harbaugh.
I seem to recall we went 6-10 after shipping our legendary QB away, too...but it wasn't for lack of performance that Brett got "fired" and the Niners didn't fire Harbaugh because they had someone waiting in the wings they thought was going to get them a Lombardi.
Wade Phillips, like he says, is a lousy HC but a pretty good DC. With that personnel it'd be hard not to field a defense like Denver's. Expecting Wade Phillips to turn what we have into the same thing he had in Denver would leave people scratching their heads, I think. It is too bad, though, that we didn't snatch Wade up when he was out of football. Nope...had to hold onto Dom. We refused to change and we're stuck with Dom, for another year. That's so disappointing.
BTW, Elway sure seems to think Kubiak is why they got over the hump. I don't share that opinion. I don't share the opinion that it was Wade Phillips, either. It was John Elway putting winners on that field that got them over the hump. He went out and got 3 defensive studs in FA two years ago in TJ Ward, DeMarcus Ware and Aqib Talib...that is the definition of "going for it". That was done after failing to win a SB vs. Seattle. Did that fanbase and org praise itself for it's accomplishment of making it to a SB? Nope...it simply wasn't good enough for them and they added new better pieces to get there and then fired their coach, later, to boot...all in the relentless pursuit of what they achieved yesterday. Even had they lost, I would be so complimentary of Elway for really really trying to bring a championship to Denver. We haven't and won't see anything like that from our GM and you know that to be true.
Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because theyâve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."
