During a punt-return period, neither Ty Montgomery nor Jeff Janis worked as return men. Instead, they worked as line-of-scrimmage players who can rush or block — Janis with the No. 1 return unit and Montgomery with the No. 2. The Packers drafted Montgomery in the third round in part because of his return abilities, though they might view him as more of a kickoff returner than punt returner. He had a 25.2-yard average on 27 kickoff returns at Stanford, and a 19.8-yard average on 12 punt returns. The six players catching punts were Hyde, Randall Cobb, Blue, Larry Pinkard, Raijon Neal and Hunt.

I'm a bit surprised that Montgomery and Janis didn't even practice it, but I'm not shocked about it. Last year Janis didn't seem to move quick enough after the catching the punt and while Montgomery is thought of as a return specialist, he needs to work on his hands and catching the ball, which is most likely to turn to turn overs on punt returns. In fact, I think in their college game against each other, Montgomery muffed a punt catch and Randall (as a ST gunner) then came in and pushed him away from the ball before dropping down onto it. Montgomery needs to work on catching it.

Reports have been that Neal has shown really good hands in the passing game and kick return game, haven't heard about him on punts until now. But I think Neal is most likely the 3rd RB if he stays healthy.

TBH, I wish we'd just leave Hyde back there. He may not be fast but he's looked far more natural at it than any other of the people we've had on returns the past few years.

I think Richardson will be one of the gunners come game time as he did such a good job at it last year. But if he can get off the jam and tackle, in theory Janis might make a good gunner with that speed.

As for Janis returning, I thought was getting a slow start after catching punts last preseason but thought he looked very impressive in his kick returns and wonder why he hasn't gotten more chances at doing that at I thought he was clearly better than RB Harris who they had doing it last year.
