Ron Zook in line to get Packers special teams top job

Ron Zook, 60, worked under Shawn Slocum, who was fired Friday after six seasons as coordinator and three seasons before that as Mike Stock’s assistant.

We can only hope Zook does well, but generally speaking, hiring someone who was part of the problem doesn't bring confidence.

It's hard to be angry that the Special Teams coordinator will not be Shawn Slocum. Ron Zook was just brought in last off season and maybe his being hired was a precursor for moving into this position?

While I am not angry, I am far from excited. I would like to see a clean house, or at the very least a whole new approach to special teams similar to what happened when Dom Capers was brought in to replace Bob Sanders.

Mike already has a credibility problem after saying he "can't countenance the Packers and underdogs" in that game, then turning around and pissing it away in all-time humiliating fashion.

Promoting the guy who was supposed to do Slocum's job FOR him, but who ended up only making things worse isn't gonna inspire confidence in anyone.

Remember, this team plays more starters on ST than any other team in the league. And yet we were WORST in the league on ST, with what, 7 blocked kicks? Fuck you, Mike.

It seemed to me just the opposite - hardly any starters on special teams unless you count the O Line starters. I don't know how much difference a ST coach can make, creativity-wise. If Zook had any good ideas to contribute, he probably would have expressed them as an assistant. I think Slocum got fired because his guys made bonehead plays that come under the category of discipline more so than "he shoulda known better". Obviously Bostick knew better, he just made the blunder anyway. I'd say a few of that kind of thing is cause to get rid of the coach. Put me down as thinking also, a new guy with a whole new approach would be better.

Zook is not really anything to get excited about but at least he's somewhat new blood being that he was just hired last year and was not a long time assistant to Slocum.
