The former Hardee's restaurant has been torn down and Green Bay Packers contractors are removing the underground gasoline storage tanks at the old Citgo station. Kmart will soon follow.
The Packers are removing empty buildings on property they acquired west of Lambeau Field, along Lombardi Avenue and South Ridge Road. Team spokesman Aaron Popkey said earlier this week they wanted to raze the buildings before winter to save on maintenance, fire protection and security.
The team plans to develop land west of Lambeau Field to provide it with non-football sources of income, similar to New England's Patriot Place adjacent to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. Patriot Place includes restaurants, retail shops, a movie theater, a hotel and a Bass Pro Shop.
Popkey said the Packers are working on several concepts for development.
The Packers recently acquired the Mobil gas station at 1031 Lombardi Ave. Paperwork on the purchase of the nearby Citgo station at 1922 S. Ridge Road has not been filed with the county.
