GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The short view is that the Green Bay Packers have a tackling problem -- again. Of the 28 teams that have played in Week 1 so far, only one missed more tackles than the Packers did in their 36-16 season-opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks. According to ProFootballFocus.com, the Packers whiffed 18 times against the Seahawks. The New Orleans Saints, in their loss to the Atlanta Falcons, missed 23 (see accompanying chart). In the long run, however, it might be too soon to say missed tackles will doom the Packers once again.

This is a league wide issue.. but I concur.. the Packers are a pathetic tackling team. Have been for a while.. but I think the soft rules in camp are contributing to the issue.. nothing like contact and tackling drills to develop a good tackling team.

Maybe the Packers should take the SeaChicken's moto.. just pay the fine and have a more physical camp.

I like McCarthey's offensive game, but we have to be honest; the man is soft as Liberace at the Playboy Mansion - and that is evident throughout his team.

Tackling in the NFL is a complete joke, for the most part. In my opinion, it comes from a few things...

- The constant rule changes to make the game safe. This leads to guys hesitating on tackles because they don't want to be penalized and even further, possibly fined.

- Possible lack of past coaching on form tackling. A stretch, maybe, but if you are playing defense in the NFL you think you'd have some idea on how to attempt a form tackle. Watching some of these guys tackle is funny to watch.

I think the Packers have a whole other issue aside from the tackling problem. It is having more than one guy near the ball carrier. Too many times, a guy is breaking a terrible, weak tackle or trucking one of our guys and there isn't another guy within 5 yards to clean up the mess. This relates to the other new post in here about Pete Carroll getting on his players poor tackling. Sure, they missed tackles...but they have 1, 2, 3 and sometimes 4 other guys there to clean it up and make the tackle.

Just like you can't develop them during one TC. If the coaching staff demanded nothing less than solid tackling or the player would not get onto the field they would step up. There are a few Deon Sanders types out there who are afraid of contact but for the most part they can do it if they are required to do so. The players are like a 5 year old, if all the parent does is talk talk talk without any action it doesn't take the players long to realize there is o downside to ineffective tackles.
