Lombardi decided to use a G on the helmet of the Packers for 'Greatness'. I always thought it was for Green Bay, but wondered where the B went.

Very cool. I always wondered why they didn't have the interlocking GB on the helmet like you saw on the hat Lombardi wore on the practice field.

One letter is more memorable than two. I've always liked the G.

Here's a question: Which came first? The Packer G or the University of Georgia G?

Green Bay had it first and licensed it to Georgia and Grambling according to this article:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2071363

GRAMBLING, La. -- It turns out Grambling State never owned the oval G logo it has used on its football helmets for almost 31 years.

The school created a furor among its fans when it announced last week that it planned to design a new athletic logo because the school has no legal way to make anyone pay for using the current one.

The trademark had lapsed, officials said. But school records show that, in reality, the school didn't even apply for a trademark on the oval G until Jan. 14, 1997, and was turned down in February 1998.

The design was too close to previously registered trademarks, according to paperwork provided by GSU spokeswoman Vickie Jackson.

The Green Bay Packers hold the trademark. They've used their oval G since 1961.

The NFL club says it granted limited permission to use a similar mark to the University of Georgia (in 1964) and to Grambling.

Grambling's application was listed as "abandoned" on Dec. 18, 1998, causing some confusion.

Jackson said school officials have held on-again, off-again discussions about a new design since 1998.

"Grambling, with its renown and international acclaim, should have its own mark," Jackson said. "This administration is taking us to another level. Part of that is standardizing the look."

Some fans say aggressive marketing and management might do better for Grambling, since fans know the current logo.

After all, Georgia is currently the No. 3 seller among clients of Collegiate Licensing Company -- the oldest and largest licensing representative in the nation.

It was chosen in part as a tribute to Willie Davis, who had graduated from Grambling and gone on to become the school's first Hall of Fame while playing for Green Bay, said Wilbert Ellis, who was then an assistant to R.W.E. Jones -- at that time, both school president and baseball coach.

Over the four previous years, Grambling had gone 39-9 in football, sharing three conference titles and seeing 25 of its players taken in the NFL draft.

Ellis said football coach Eddie Robinson, Jones, the late basketball coach Fred Hobdy and longtime sports information director Collie J. Nicholson met to come up with a logo for the football helmets, then just black.

"Back in the day, that wasn't important to us at all," said Doug Williams, who first started for Grambling as a freshman in 1974, and went on to succeed Robinson as coach. "Uniforms and fanciness were not important. That's basically what made Grambling what it is. We were plain. We just had a good product on the field."

But it quickly became important. "We knew, from then on, we were representing the 'G,"' said basketball coach Larry Wright, who starred for Hobdy's squads from 1973-76.

Williams, coach from 1998-2003, said a G with a tiger -- essentially the same logo proposed last week -- was brought forward four or five years ago.

"I told them back then that you can change it, but we're not going to put in on the helmet," he said.

No one could recall the exact details of how Grambling gained permission to use the logo -- or why the school waited so long to attempt to gain its own trademark.

"The 'G' is legendary," said Wright. "It goes right along with Eddie Robinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones, Fred Hobdy. So, when you talk about that and the history of this school, there will have to be some economic decision involved in changing it.

"And, as I understand it, there is."

Earling Hunter, a Monroe native who graduated from Grambling in 1998, said the proposed new logo is OK by him.

"I like the fact that the new logo could incorporate the tiger mascot, and that it does not completely abandon the traditional Grambling 'G,"' Hunter said. "Although I love the 'G,' and even have tattoo of that emblem on my right arm, I still have no objection to the change."

Much thanks for the info, bigfog and WhiskeySam. I'd always wondered about that.

You know, I think the G really does stand for Green Bay. They could never get away with having a G on the helmet if the name of the city did not start with a G. I think Vince was just being Vince when he said it stood for "greatness."

I don't doubt his reasoning, but I don't think if it was the "Ashwaubenon Packers" that there would be a G on the side of the helmet. It'd probably be an A for Awesomeness.

I'm going with the thought that G an B didn't look appealing enough to him and he needed some explanation as to why he's going with a G only.

I believe it was the equipment manager that made the actual G design.

edit, The oval "G" logo was created in 1961 by Packers equipment manager George "Dad" Braisher.

It was SUPPOSED to be a "C", for "CHEESEY'S TEAM",,,,but someone screwed it up and made it a "G".
They said otherwise it would have looked too much like the Chicago "C".

beast (4h) : Thanks dfosterf, I'm still kicking myself for last week, as I forgot to change to pick Vikings and Lions... after putting in a holding spot.
Zero2Cool (5h) : First alternate: Elgton Jenkins Other alternates: Jordan Love, Kenny Clark, Keisean Nixon, Tucker Kraft, Josh Myers, Jaire Alexander
Zero2Cool (5h) : Pro Bowl still a thing? Guess Packers have three. Jacobs, Gary, McKinney.
dfosterf (6h) : It's a mine field with all the players sitting, etc
dfosterf (6h) : There was quite a bit of "chalk" matchups this year it seemed, but not this week coming up
Zero2Cool (6h) : Or we got better and by we I mean everyone except me
Zero2Cool (6h) : We have about six that by percent would have won nearly any season. I guess 2024 was predictable 🤷
Zero2Cool (6h) : You can check previous seasons. I quick did it and don't think anyone hit 70% before
dfosterf (6h) : Hats off to the Beast
dfosterf (6h) : I'm at 71.76% in pick 'em. 2nd place. Beast is at a flat 75% 9 games ahead. That 75% has got to be unprecedented this late in the season
beast (7h) : I don't care deeply, just want some good entertaining games
Zero2Cool (7h) : BTW, not serious.
Zero2Cool (7h) : You don't care about it either!!!!
Zero2Cool (7h) : NIL and Portal killed college, no one cares about it.
Mucky Tundra (12h) : outside of Texas-Arizona St, it's been a snoozefest
beast (16h) : I expect Georgia will change that tomorrow, but we'll have to wait and see. If they do, then only Big 10 and SEC are left.
beast (16h) : So much for Conference Championship meaning something as 100% (so far) of the conference Champions lost their first playoff game.
Zero2Cool (1-Jan) : Jaire had surgery, season over.
Mucky Tundra (1-Jan) : I guess I need a new sig Pic. Boo
Mucky Tundra (1-Jan) : Eric Dickerson approves of this decision
beast (1-Jan) : Eagles are resting RB Saquon Barkley, so there is no chance he breaks the record despite being just 101 yards from it
Zero2Cool (1-Jan) : Patriots are waiving veteran pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue
beast (1-Jan) : Happy New Year's 🥳🎉
beast (31-Dec) : I want to them chant some songs for Daniel Whelan
beast (31-Dec) : Let's win one! Also, hopefully the Irish will stand with Daniel Whelan
Mucky Tundra (31-Dec) : After London and Brazil, I could go without an overseas game for a while
Zero2Cool (31-Dec) : Packers. Steelers. Ireland. 2025. Reports say.
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Matt Lafleur on if Jaire will play again this season. "Yeah I don't know... he's been dealing with swelling."
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : After the way they played for most of the game yesterday, I don't see how you can sit anyone for the whole game
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : I'd say play everyone. Going into playoffs at 7th seed on two game lose streak - yucky
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Do the Packers have any best players?
beast (30-Dec) : Play or Rest*
beast (30-Dec) : Should the Packers play or free their best players vs the Bears?
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Packers should be 3 - 2 in the Division. Bonkers being swept by both Lions and Vikings. yikes
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : All crazy stuff…and good point beast
beast (30-Dec) : Packers should be 0-5 in the division, can't say I saw that coming, even 1-4
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Sam Darnold 35 TD's ... another one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Baker Mayfield, 39 TD's ... can't say I saw that one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : No matter who is playing as 7th, I think we want them to win. Get rid of 2nd seed haha
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : That would be dhazer who was rooting for Minnesota
beast (30-Dec) : Well, Commanders are currently the 6th seed and Packers the 7th
beast (30-Dec) : Who was it in Chat, that wanted the Vikings to win (because Lions fans upset them) because Packers could not lose the 6th seed?
beast (30-Dec) : If Falcons win, Packers stay as the 6th seed and Falcons lead the NFCS, if they lose, Commanders 6th and Bucs take NFCS lead
beast (30-Dec) : Win or Loss, the NFCS is going down to week 18
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : if the Falcons win, how does that affect the overall NFC playoff picture? Does it mean that the NFC South comes down to week 18?
beast (30-Dec) : If Commanders win, the Packers drop to the 7th seed
beast (29-Dec) : Taylor still at it!
beast (29-Dec) : Colts get the ball and fumble turn over
packerfanoutwest (29-Dec) : Jets pull Aaron Rodgers for Tyrod Taylor
Mucky Tundra (29-Dec) : Colts-Giants now a tight one
