It was SUPPOSED to be a "C", for "CHEESEY'S TEAM",,,,but someone screwed it up and made it a "G".
They said otherwise it would have looked too much like the Chicago "C".

This is a story I heard on the 'G'.

I heard this from a guy in FL who was a Packer fan and was related in some way to Lombardi's scretary...

It seems that Lombardi was a historian and had learned that the Packers were named after a meat packing company so he decided to visit a meat packing plant where he saw the slabs of meat being hung up on meat hooks. He came across a meat hook which he noticed when turned sideways, looked sort of like the letter G. Thus the inspiration came to him that the Packers wear on the helmet.

I don't know if this story is true but I don't know why the guy would lie about it....
