Fair? How long has McCarthy had to coach up his OL to run the ball?

If he hasn't coached them to properly and effectively run block these last 4 years, then something is very wrong. Unfortunately, this and a number of otherareas on his team are in shambles.

I wonder how Lombardi might have addressed your stance on this.

Next, because of their pass blocking skills, we very reasonably decided to operate within a zone-blocking run scheme. Within this scheme it is the lineman's job to move laterally uniformly and allow the back to find a hole in the wall and burst through it. Last year McCarthy placed most of the blame on the running backs because they were not making defenders miss. He said the line graded out pretty well.

So we went out and acquired a particularly talented running back, and he was having great success while our superstar quarterback kept opposing defenses from crowding the box. Now without Aaron our opponents don't respect the pass, and are loading up 8 defenders in the box almost constantly. We are now asking them to do something they have NEVER been asked to do. We are asking the 5 of them along with maybe a TE or Kuhn to go out there and move 8 men so we can sustain a drive. I don't think it is fair to expect them to succeed, because this isn't a scenario they've ever faced before, nor is it a strength of the unit.

It just isn't realistic. Lombardi's stance doesn't seem applicable here. He coached in an era where football was significantly different (and he wasn't burdened by a salary cap either).

I just can't find that logic acceptable. Is Peyton Manning's line given a pass on run blocking? Tom Brady's? Drew Brees'?

Our OL coaching has been horrible and in need of change for years.

Believe me StoicFire, I totally get what you are saying, and I agree much of that is indeed what happened.

But, we are talking about a Head Coach who just a year ago stated publicly that he didn't need to run the football. Allowing your players to be coached one dimensionally leads to the kind of stuff we've seen. A line that can't block and create holes for a star RB, and a HC who doesn't know how to use that star RB properly. This is not on the GM, but the HC for coaching failures.

In McCarthy's defense though, he has shown (and the team has produced) incredible growth. He said we didn't need a run game, and then he found out why we did. He admitted that we couldn't ignore the run game if we wanted to win championships. So in one offseason, he installed a running game that was top 5 in the league until we lost Aaron to injury.

So I guess there are two messages I really wanted to drive home.
1) The run game is failing primarily due to the loss of our quarterback, not due to some fantastic failure by our head coach or horrific O-line play. The odds are stacked against them.
2) McCarthy is a really good coach, and he should (and will) keep his job.

Just my opinion, and I need to learn that I can't force it on others (no matter how desperately I want to).
