GREEN BAY — While his teammates are getting ready for their Monday Night Football showdown with archrival Chicago, Clay Matthews will be at the doctor's office.

The Green Bay Packers four-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker hasn't played since breaking his right thumb against Detroit on Oct. 6, but when he gets the pins removed from the thumb on Monday — a fact he confirmed to reporters on Wednesday — he will be one step closer to returning to the field. He won't play against the Bears, but if he can return Nov. 10 against Philadelphia, he will have missed only four games.

The Packers take a four-game winning streak into Monday night's game at Lambeau Field, with three of those victories coming with their star defensive player sidelined.

"I've been very impressed with our team. It's not just about me," Matthews said Wednesday afternoon. "There's a bunch of other guys on this team and they've been doing a fantastic job, specifically speaking on defense, getting pressure on the quarterback.

"It's good to see."

Despite playing without Matthews, the Packers are tied for 10th in the NFL with 23 sacks entering this week's games. Matthews, who has 45.5 career regular-season sacks in four-plus seasons, had three sacks at the time of his injury, which occurred — coincidentally enough — as he was sacking Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Not only have the Packers played without Matthews, but fellow starting outside linebacker Nick Perry has missed the last two games with a foot injury, and starting inside linebacker Brad Jones has been out since suffering a hamstring injury the same day Matthews broke his thumb.

"I look forward to the time when we get all of our troops together at the same time," defensive coordinator Dom Capers said. "I think what we're going through now is these guys are gaining experience. We'll be able to use that experience over the second half of the season. There's been times where, we were looking at (only) having maybe two outside linebackers to play.

"I'm encouraged by that because we've proven we can go out and win with those guys."

But as well as the Packers defense has played without Matthews — in the three games he's missed, the unit has registered 11 sacks and 61 total points — Matthews said he's not going to be extra careful with the injury and wait any longer than the doctors make him wait.

"I'm not a patient guy, as you guys are well aware," Matthews said. "I'll never learn to be patient. It's difficult because with most rehab injuries you feel as if you're getting better and working toward something, but with this it's obviously a different case. I kind of have to wait for doctors' opinions and specific procedures in order to take the field. That's what is the most frustrating."

Matthews said he had hoped to play through the injury wearing a club cast to protect the hand. But because of the type of injury he sustained, he had no choice but to have surgery.

Matthews suffered a Bennett fracture, in which the first metacarpal bone at the base of the thumb breaks away from the joint, leaving behind a fragment that remains attached to one of the ligaments in the thumb joint.

If not surgically repaired, the injury can lead to permanent problems, such as reduced grip strength in the hand.

"I thought I was coming back in during the fourth quarter of the Detroit game. But once we got the X-rays, we learned it was a unique fracture/dislocation," Matthews said. "I was all for it (playing), but there was no way around it with (what) these doctors were telling me the possible risks were as well as future life after football as far as my hand and what could happen.

"I definitely would like to push through it. I feel like I could and I'd be able to. Pain is not an issue for me. It's more so about being smart — and at times I'm not the smartest."

Matthews said he didn't really feel much pain when it happened and wasn't even sure how the injury occurred.

"I'm just a tough son of a bitch. Pardon my language. Delete that everyone," Matthews said with a laugh. "When you break a bone in your hand, especially with the adrenaline running, you don't really feel it until afterwards when the pain kicks in. But pain is not an issue as far as playing through it. I've played through a number of injuries. I've got a great pain threshold.

"It's about being smart and what I'm capable of doing — at this position, too, it's difficult with one hand. I'll deal with that when I'm able to club it up and come back, but for the time being we're praying for the best and hoping my body heals up on time and get back out there and help this team out."

I hope they still give Perry a shot on the right side.

Hopefully all this time off has given Matthews a chance to let his hamstrings completely recover. This injury could possibly be a blessing in the long run.

I hope he is still running in practice or in his spare time to keep them ready, if you will. Hopefully he doesn't pull one *knock on wood*.

My father is a retired D3 coach so I still follow the team. They had a "Coaches Corner" Podcast this week with the HC and the Strength Coach.
Even at this level they have their kids in to train three times a week and the SC talked about tailoring the conditioning based on injuries.
You can bet Mathews isn't sitting around the training facility waiting to heal.
"The train is leaving the station."

Zero2Cool (2h) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (6h) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (6h) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (7h) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (7h) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (7h) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (7h) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (7h) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (7h) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (8h) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (8h) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (8h) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (8h) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (8h) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (8h) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (8h) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (10h) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (10h) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (10h) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Mark Murphy says Steelers likely to protect Packers game. Meaning, no Ireland
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Struggling to figure out what text editor options are needed and which are 'nice to have'
Mucky Tundra (8-Apr) : *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : WR who said he'd break Xavier Worthy 40 time...and ran slower than you
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Texas’ WR Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Falcons, Packers and Titans starting next week.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : The spotting of the ball IS the issue. Not the chain gang.
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Will there be a tracker on the ball or something?
