Years ago I read that you could use shredded paper as insulation. SAFELY

I recall a mention of boric acid as a fire-retardent. I also recall a mention of baking soda to perform the same function.

In theory, were I to take a basement load of paper files and run them through a standard paper shredder, treat them with whatever the mix of chemical/ water? and dry-time might be, then stuff them in my attic as a semi-free insulation...

How much baking soda per (whatever) ?

Alternatives? Actual viability of the drinkin' and thinkin' scheme? (Isn't that fundamentally cellulose? šŸ– )

Do you ring the egg white out of the shell with your finger like my grandma use to as well? Fuck dude, your time is worth more money than the insulation would cost to have someone blow it in.

I would actually do it, instead of letting the files rot down there.

All things being equal, I would prefer to spend the money on chemicals and my time vs. a highly- opinionated- yet- clueless-union-fee-fucking-type-moron asshole-redneck with some bullshit esoteric skill I happen to need at the time sucking on my financial tit.

Oh shit, sorry Dakota...

I forgot who I was responding to. I know those are your bros

Nevermind.

I admit I like wipe my ass idea.

The wife might have issues with it, lol A couple of tons of paper with my shit on it don't look good on paper were she to roll down there, lol

Even if you treat the paper, it is still a firehazard. If your insurance provider would find out, they would not be happy. Critters like Mice would love shredded paper, the Amount you would need to obtain a good R value would probably be way more than you want to do. I wouldn't waste the time and effort. I bill my time when working at $75/hr so the time to return isn't worth it IMO.

If you are concerned about the amount of insulation, rent a blower and fill it in yourself, or buy rolls. You would want about 14 inches of real insulation, so with regular paper shredded yo would need even more because it is not as effective as blown cellulose. Even more important, make sure there is proper ventilation, it makes your insulation work better. The attic should be as close to the same temperature as outside.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

My intention is to pump 6' of insulation into that attic.

The blower is not an issue, nor is the hourly time. Since my raise, my time is worth a solid 9.65 per hr. While not comparing favorably to your 75 per hour earnings, it compares quite favorably with your 75 earned. If you want the blower as a homeowner or contractor, you can come rent it from me at the Home Depot. We'll give it to you as long as you buy a minimum 10 bags of my (as informed by Dakota šŸ˜ ) glorified professionally treated shit-paper to throw up in your attic.

Gimme credit, I can get an argument goin', lol lol lol

I wonder if fecal matter is a fire-retardent? (Don't tell the wife I asked that)

Don't start on him! I want an actual answer, and it's gonna take quite long enough with all the low hanging fruit left by yours truly. That paper mache' garden ornament will feel compelled to issue his usual insults and sophmoric lame attemps at psuedo-sophisticated humor prior to getting down to actual technical business enough as it stands without egging his night-school-educated ass on.

So... again- don't aggravate him.
