Fuck the Government helping me... let me fuck up my money and learn my own lessons. No wonder people make so many mistakes, they think the Government is gonna bail their ass out ... and sometimes.... IT DOES!! OMfG!

Already looked into consolidation/refi, can't do it, or at least not in a way that I'd get any benefit from it. I'd gladly triple the monthly payments for a couple percentage points off but nope, government says you can't refinance for a term shorter than 10 years. Thank you, noble government for saving me from the evil banks. I could probably take out a loan from a local bank for this but as I understand it, I'll probably take a hit to my credit score. I absolutely love that in order to have a great credit rating, you need to regularly borrow money... But not too much, or too often.

I'm not really sure if I'd qualify as frugal, but I try not to eat out more than about twice a week, maybe three times. I used to limit it to about once a week. I don't have a data plan for my phone and don't text, I have cable internet but no TV, and otherwise try to avoid those things that tend to nickle and dime you to death. Lord knows I could save probably $1500 a year by not eating out at all, but at some point you've got to decide to not be TOO frugal... In my mind, if you don't treat yourself at least a little bit once in a while, that's as bad as working 60 hours a week when you're young because you want to get all sorts of stuff you'll never have time to enjoy. Balance in all things. :)

As for your school debt - you have to kind of look at that as bad luggage. You're going to keep it around for a while. You have a choice to get that paid off ASAP and forego getting a house, or you can be like most Americans and just dive into to debt and have everyting now and just pay the interest. What I've done with mortgages is this: both houses I've purchased were on 30 year notes. In each case - I refinanced to a 15 year mortgage when interest was low. Along with the refinancing I absorbed as much other debt as possible into the loan while still being above the 20%
minimum for the down payment.

As far as savings goes - there are good rules of thumb to follow, but the people that get to follow them don't usually have the freaking unusual happen to them like your child developing a brain tumor. I agree with Zombie though, that you should enjoy your life and not pinch the head of the penny through the ass. You'll make all the right moves - I've got no doubt. Wait until the kids come around - then you're going to know what real costs are. 😂

My only advice would be:
(i) (seconding zombieslayer) put money in matching 401(k) as soon as you can -- about the only smart thing I've done over the years is match the employers 10% contribution (which probably will go bye-bye next year or the year after). Unfortunately, because I stayed a student so much, I didn't start getting any such contrib until I was 39.
(ii) (seconding DakotaT) Eat out less. Think 1-2 times a week instead of 2-3, then reduce to 1-2 every two weeks. Everyone knows I love good cooking, and good restaurants can do things I'm not likely to try even if I somehow had the time to. And they have access to (relatively) cheap USDA Prime/high end Choice quality meat, seafood, etc that most of us don't. But the markup is horrible. Think 200% plus. And don't get me started on Starbucks-type coffee! Eating out should be a treat, not a habit until your income passes 60K per person.

Disagree with DakotaT on the marinade sneer, though. Marinading cures many sins if you have cheap cuts of meat or aren't much of a cook, and if you have good cuts or a good cook, it can take you to the next level. Even grilling: not to toot my horn too much, but I'll put my grilled venison, lamb, or pork up against anyone -- and the key to each is the marinades. Before I realized the power of marinading, I had as many disasters as successes from my experiments. But now? If it involves a marinade, I'll try something new even on people I've never cooked for before.

Unless its Kobe (which I can't afford) or Prime (which I also can't afford but buy about twice a year), I ALWAYS marinade now.

Oh, okay, I don't marinade sausage or bacon. [grin1]

Learn how to butcher Wade. My butchering group includes a professional meat cutter, so we do get the prime cuts for about $3.00 to $3.50 a pound. I think your estimate on butchering markup is low.

You cook a steak like Woody does - http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=3&ved=0CFUQtwIwAg&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DZwIWsquytZ4&ei=o2oVUO71H8SV6wHO_4DoBw&usg=AFQjCNEhRtAqECOkGBE6XuXFJjs22sUC9Q&sig2=p29zwgqMQvNlhAXHGelkTA about 44 seconds.

Keep your marinades Wade. A little Lawry's seasoning salt will do me just fine.

Oh yeah, if you like fancy coffee - buy a Keurig and drink all the fancy coffees for much cheaper and then laugh at the clowns that pay $5+ for 24 ounces of Joe.

I never said a marinated sirloin is better than a high-end cut. I only said that you can make a sirloin (or anything else) pretty good with the right marinade.

And you can ensure you don't ruin that good cut, that's all. (I've ruined a lot of food in my day.) And you can ruin a good cut of beef damn fast if you aren't careful. And even more so for other meats like pork, lamb, and chicken.

I can't remember the last time I actually had to buy hamburger from a grocery store. But I have watched people brown hamburger and have to drain off a bunch of water and fat. I am very amused by that.

We have a ban saw, an industrial mixer/grinder, a 6'X 4'X 10' stainless steel smoker that we built ourselves, and a walk in cooler aslo built by ourselves in my buddies shop - and a group of about 8 guys and a few stragglers who sometimes help out. It takes about 5 good days of hard work, but well worth it from a financial aspect, and a quality control aspect. When I go to restaurants, I never order steak - I usually get seafood.

Summary: Wade and DakotaT need to have a steak cook-off. In my backyard. And I get to be the judge. Also, this cook-off is every week so I can take the tasty left-overs to work every day.

Mucky Tundra (2h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.

Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.

Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)

Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
