... that's right Barry you won't say it because everyone KNOWS it! :)

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/07/12/barry-sanders-id-never-say-i-was-better-than-emmitt-smith/

In the 1990s, one of the best barstool debates for NFL fans was whether Barry Sanders or Emmitt Smith was the best running back in the league. But while that may have been (and may still be) a fun argument for fans and members of the media, it’s not an argument that Sanders will participate in.

Asked in a radio interview if he was better than Smith, Sanders answered, “I would never say that. He was too great of a player, and I loved competing against him.”

Sanders might not want to get into it, but the rest of us can. The arguments for Sanders are that he was more of a big-play threat than Smith, that he averaged 5.0 yards a carry to Smith’s 4.2, and that he was doing it behind a much weaker offensive line, and without a great passing game to keep defenses honest. The arguments for Smith are that he lasted longer, racked up 3,000 more career yards, was better in short yardage and did much more in the postseason.

At least, those are the bare-bones arguments. I’m sure PFT Planet will go into more detail below. I’ll get things started by saying that my vote, admittedly biased as someone who was a Detroit-area 12-year-old when the Lions drafted Sanders, goes to Barry.

Ticker: Barry Sanders, on his dad, new career and more

Lions legend Barry Sanders is making the media rounds to promote an app (getinthegame.com) in which he and other athletes share “lessons” about their sports.

He talked with WFAN in N.Y. and with Mitch Albom on WJR-AM (760) on Monday. Highlights:

• On the recent death of his father: “It’s hard to believe he’s gone. … He left his mark on all of us. He was a huge sports fan.”

• On being a pitchman: “When I retired, I figured I would be long forgotten about.”

• On whether failing to win a Super Bowl was his one regret: “I don’t know what else I could have done. But at the same time, that’s why you play the game. It sure would have been nice to at least have one. When you first enter the NFL, you assume you’ll play in several Super Bowls. That thing is very elusive.”

• On if he was better than Emmitt Smith: “I would never say that. He was too great of a player, and I loved competing against him.”

This quote "I don’t know what else I could have done." regarding not sure what more he could have done to get the Lions to the Super Bowl tells me he's still a little pissed that the Lions management/ownership didn't do more for the team. Which assisted in his loss of loving the game and ultimately retired. After his last game, he was in the locker room and started sobbing, because he realized the game wasn't fun for him anymore.

Smith lasted longer? Debatable. Sanders retired still at his prime. Who knows how many 1k+ seasons Sanders could have churned out had he not retired.

Just goes to show Barry Sanders was one of a kind!

Ah, such a PC answer.

He knows he was beter.

Everyone knows he was better.

Put Sanders on those Cowboys teams and he instantly is the team, even with Aikman and that batshit crazy WR in the line up.

That offensive line, combined with the rest of that offense, might've carried him to something ridiculous like a 5.5 career average and some amazing total yards.

Such a shame the Lions didn't trade him when they could still get something for him. Their stubbornness meant that there were absolutely no winners in the whole situation.
