I disagree. He is a prime, prime, prime candidate to trade. He is a super talent, no question, but, one that would also garner a super return. Under contract, a reasonable contract at that, for two years. Please explain why we couldn't possibly trade him.

This isn’t the same situation as Javon Walker, which is the only player I recall Thompson trading on the day of the draft. Walker wanted out. Finley doesn’t. The Packers also have one of the deepest rosters in the league. They certainly have more needs than their 15-win season suggests, but they're a far more talented roster than in ‘06.

Secondly, they got little production from the position after Finley went down in 2010. Trading Finley just creates another need. None of their TEs has done much of anything. They’ve scored TDs on designed plays by McCarthy inside the red zone, but I can’t recall any of their TEs actually creating something between the 20s as Finley has.

Finally, the Packers likely would've franchised him and then dealt him. Why go through the hassle of re-signing him to a two-year contract, when you can franchise him for six million on a one-year deal? Trading him is clearly not in the plans.

I'm starting to think we stand pat and take the McClellin kid out of Boise St, plug him in at OLB and have bookend Kevin Greenes. I like Konz and Zeitler too, but I think you have to take McClellin if he is still there. A lot of people are mocking him to us at 28.

No chance that Finley is traded, it isn't a matter of if he has trade value(he does) its a matter of keeping your talented players, Finley is a top 5 TE(even with the drops) and you don't trade away players that good that you've just resigned. Finley is a young guy and his career is still very much on the upswing, he has the potential to be the best TE in the league, you don't give up on guys with the potential to be the best at their position. The Packers were ready to franchise Finley, that says a LOT about what they think of him.

I think its reasonable to say that the Packer's likely see Finely's value as higher than what they would get in a trade for him. You really have to look at the history of trades to understand this, how often do teams trade away young players who are under contract with huge potential? Most trades happen because a player is under performing, a malcontent, has a huge contract, etc etc.

You also have to remember that trading players for picks is extremely risky, on one hand you know exactly what you have with a player, and on the other hand, the draft is a complete crap shoot. Sure I would trade Finley for a draft pick if it meant I would get another Clay Mathews, but any idiot can look smart making draft picks in hindsight, in reality it just doesn't work that way.

I will go out on a limb and say the packers will not trade *any* starter for draft picks. Any trades will be for picks(very likely) or backup/role players(less likely). I think the last player Ted Thompson traded on draft day was Javon Walker(again with the malcontent thing). I also don't see GB making a huge trade up in the first, you have to give up too many high picks to make that happen, moving up past 20 is likely out of the question.

Again nobody is saying Finley doesn't have trade value, or that DE and OLB aren't huge needs, but thinking you can pull off these magical trades and everything will just fall into place isn't realistic at all.

Javon Walker traded draft day for what turned out to be Greg Jennings and Jason Spitz. I'd say that worked out pretty damn well. Please refresh our memories of what a choir boy Finley was in 2010.

This from the bleacher:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1106807-packers-tight-end-jermichael-finley-is-he-overrated

"Prior to the 2011 season, everyone from McCarthy to quarterback Aaron Rodgers to nearly every Packers fan on every football message board in existence bought their tickets for the Finley hype train. Rodgers hinted at the prospect of a 1,000-yard season for Finley on his weekly ESPN radio show, while fantasy football “experts” implored everyone to make Finley one of the first couple tight ends taken in their drafts.

How did it pan out?

Well, it’s sort of a mixed bag. On one hand, Finley’s 767 yards and eight touchdowns are nothing to sneeze at, especially when you consider the immense amount of talent the Packers have in their receiving corps. After all, there are only so many footballs to go around. On the other hand, Finley did not have a single 100-yard game all season.

You’d think this guy who we have all talked about as a matchup nightmare, an absolute beast who can line up at receiver if need be, would have one monster game in a season where Aaron Rodgers was setting all kinds of records."

Yeah, and Ted has so many cards in his hand that they are falling all over the table...

Also noted at KFFL the Bears have been looking extensively at McClellin. Hmm.

dfosterf (25-Jun) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
