Well if he has at least an average pass rush/run stop/pass coverage that's three different aspects that get upgraded from Walden.

Eagles | More details on DeMeco Ryans trade
Tue, 20 Mar 2012 17:32:07 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Philadelphia Eagles will trade a third-round pick, and a fourth-round pick, to the Houston Texans for LB DeMeco Ryans and a third-round pick.

Damn Ted Thompson why can't he get steals like this

Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

So if Phillips didn't buy into him playing the 3-4.. why would we have thought him to be a good fit? Not to mention basically chewing up all our cap space in the process.

But Ryans in the Philly 4-3 defense seems custom made.. one of the biggest weaknesses the Eagles had, interior defense, has been solved. He also brings a level of leadership and toughness to a team that had its heart question a number of times last season, example Cullen Jenkins speaking out about it.

Additionally, sooner or later the Eagles bill for their free agent spending is going to hit home.. but they are a team that has a small window to win. They are going for it.

All this talk about Ryans struggling in the 3-4 is based on what? He had a very good season last year. People are only trying to justify the Texans giving a stud away for way too cheap.

I am not saying that I agree with it, but it is apparent they didn't think it a good fit. I point more towards the $$$ than anything. Same thing will happen soon in Philly.. you can't bank roll that many players this quickly and not take the Cap hits accordingly.

And yes, he was overshadowed by Cushing who had a Pro Bowl caliber season and ate into his stats from the other inside backer position. It still doesn't mean they gave him away at the right price.

Yes I hate stats being the sole point of an argument when you can flip on a game and see otherwise.

I do think they got him cheap.. but I also think they are paying the price for poor cap management. Something here in GB we haven't been prone to in a couple of years because we are not overspending outside.

The Texans had a bunch of talent accumulated over the years with high draft slots.. as that players mature the money to pay them all has to come sometimes... not to mention they are paying some top rated skill players premium dollars. IE Foster.. you have to pay him to keep him.. but damn that is steep when other players had success in the same offense. Johnson is chewing up enough outside as well.. sprinkle in a couple FA additions and bang.. you are short on cap room.

But that day is approaching fast were Ted is going to have to let a player or two walk because of the cap.. there is only so much room out there.

I like Meco.. but it doesn't change that he is making 6 mil a year and is better suited in a 4-3 and you have a team in the Texans struggling for cap space. Cushing scares me.. especially with one strike for PED's already.. it is a risk on the Texans part.

Regarding Lawson, he's a very good run defender. I think comparing him to Brad Jones doesn't do him justice. I could see the Packers using him on the outside on first and second down, and then kicking him inside on third downs, while A.J. Hawk comes off the field. Another area to look at is this allows the Packers to bring in a third down pass rush specialists. Last year, the 49ers used Aldon Smith in a similar manner. He was primary a third down player. Signing Lawson allows the Packers to look for their version of Smith, possibly Nick Perry or Andre Branch.

In eagles he should be back to playing all 3 downs.
