I agree with zombieslayer re: the overrated boomer music and the under-rated current music, too. Unfortunately, that creativity comes despite abysmal failure educationally over three generations. Neil Stephenson wrote way back in 1992 (Argh!!) (Snowcrash): "There's only four things we do better than anyone else: music, movies, microcode(software) and high-speed pizza delivery."

Well guess what? We're no longer better at movies OR music.

Don't believe me? Look at some of those youtube videos Rock has posted. Oh, to be sure, some of it is shit only Euros can come up with; but lots of it is heads and shoulders above what generations Y/Z here are listening to. And look closely at the credits for movies and music videos -- Hollywood still has eye candy worth looking at, but not much else. If you want quality movies, don't look at what Sundance and such do -- look to Australia, Eastern Europe, China.

Microcode -- I'm betting we might still have a little edge, but whatever we have, it isn't likely to last.

We're probably still best at pizza delivery, though.

Hooray for us.

The $50 Lesson

Recently, while I was working in the flower beds in the front yard, my neighbors stopped to chat as they returned home from walking their dog.

During our friendly conversation, I asked their little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up.

She said she wanted to be President some day.

Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"

She replied... "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people." Her parents beamed with pride!

"Wow...what a worthy goal!" I said. "But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that!" I told her.

"What do you mean?" she replied.

So I told her, "You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and trim my hedge, and I'll pay you $50. Then you can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house."

She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?"

I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party."

Her parents still aren't speaking to me.

Just own up to it as the sourced generation that brought about the decline of Western Civilization. 150 years from now it will be traced to you anyway! Being in the early 40's... let me begin I know of my parents generation failings.. but however I shall not blame them for the position we are in as a country. They had their hands in it, but my generation has had ample opportunity to fix the wrongs of this country and we were afforded advancements in technology that should have enabled us to do so.

Our failing has been not in changing the path we have been traveling down.. hell we only stuck the damn thing in overdrive.

Part of our mistake.. not voting some of the old guard from the prior generation, you know the career politicians that have had their hands in the cookie jar for decades. Dave Obey comes to mind.. Herb Kohl as well.

We can either hang onto blaming the prior generation or we can say screw that, learn from their mistakes and ours and start fixing this shit.
