Well, I don't disagree that the actual violence plays some part, but I'm drawn to MMA more than pro wrestling because it's actual competition, and not theater. I mean, I'm not a pro wrestling hater, if people like to watch movies, then pro wrestling is okay too.

MMA > football, these days for me. I don't know if it's because of the rule changes like Pack93z said, or post-Super Bowl depression syndrome (what do we have to win anymore?).

The two games yesterday, especially with the high ratings, maybe will bring into question the "need" to allow the offenses to rack up points like a pinball machine.. traditional balanced games do work for ratings and leave the traditional integrity of the game intact.

Even with the "offensively biased contact rules" in place.. there was still injuries. Face it.. it is part of the game.. you sign the contract, you know the risks involved with playing the sport.

If you want to play the game closer to the vest and not risk your body.. chose a different sport.

I think there's about a dozen changes that could be made to the rule book that would make the game far more interesting and entertaining for everyone.

I much prefer a tug of war game, than a game of who can get to 50 points first.

Except, the Packers I want to win every game 30 - 10 or something. I'm too old for the CardiacPack.

Several of us who were in the chat room for the playoffs made the comment that we almost had more fun watching the playoff games in which the Packers didn't appear, partly because we weren't as emotionally invested in them, but mostly because we genuinely enjoyed the style of football to which we were treated. Give me a defense like the 49ers' or the Giants' and you will see a much more cheerful me during the games.

Offense is exciting to watch, but defense is just satisfying. It's kind of like the difference between a one-night stand and a long-term relationship.

Well, it pains me to admit that I was wrong, but I thought that we'd be the 2nd team in 3 years to win a SB with this formula:
1) superior offensive firepower,
2) D that depends almost entirely on takeaways to win

It didn't happen. The '09 Saints were a fluke, and not a new rule. So it's back to the old cliche "defense wins championships."

Dammit.

Oh well though. We were #2 in '10. We can be elite again in '12 with a few tweaks.

I'm a little in the middle on how you posed this one...

Let me start by saying that I prefer defense. I think that the two most enjoyable games I've ever seen were the 17-7 victory over the Cowboys in 2009 and the 9-0 win against the Jets in 2010...

That said, I'm not that big a fan of that smashmouth style of football you speak of.

Yes, I still like to see the Ravens defense play these days, but not like I used to.

It's that psychological effect, the speed, the surgical precision that does it for me.

Even on sacks, while there's nothing better than seeing Reggie White fling a 300 pound man to the ground with one hand, I prefer having those speedy edge rushers. A Dwight Freeney, a Willie Davis, someone who has that ridiculous agility and speed for a person that size.

That said, any form of defense is suffering right now. It's all geared towards offense and I'm not a fan, either.

Ps. I know, without those 350 pound NTs, those 320 DEs, all that speed would be worthless, but you get my point.
