Packers make trade with 49ers
Posted by Mike Spofford on April 30, 2011 2:26 pm

The Packers have traded a fifth-round pick to San Francisco for a sixth-round pick and a seventh-rounder.

Green Bay traded pick No. 163 to the 49ers for picks 174 and 231.

The Packers now have three sixth-round picks and two seventh-rounders to go today.

I wish GB was trading these picks for picks next year instead of extra picks this year.

Maybe Uncle Teddy looked around and realized he needs to get some players on defense too.

THEY JUST TRADED WITH MIAMI!

The Packers have made their third trade of the day, swapping this time with the Miami Dolphins.

This one is another two-for-two swap. The Packers have given up picks 174 in the sixth round and 231 in the seventh round in exchange for Miamis 179th and 218th picks, also sixth- and seventh-round selections.

The Packers still have five picks left to make today.

I swear it's because he can't sign UDFA's. He's trying to stockpile picks to make sure he gets the guys he wants. At least that's what I think.

Why would you rather have picks next year than this year? I don't see any advantage to that.

I would rather trade a 5 this year for a 4 next year. Turn a 6 into a 5. No one knows who is coming out next year but The talent pool a round higher should be better. Generally speaking.

Ah, higher picks. I get it. I remember a few years ago when Ted traded a seventh round pick in the draft for a sixth round pick in the next year's draft. That was pretty neat. The other team really wanted a guy, I guess. But I was glad that my team was on the better end of that deal.

The only thing I can think of is that Ted doesn't expect these guys to make the team and he doesn't want to tie up a lot of money in signing bonuses.

I think it is possible that picks this year may be more important for filling needs due to the unique situation with the league lockout.

In general I wouldn't argue with future picks though... this year just seems like a special situation.
