Por - I don't mind what they get paid. Make it million, million five; but when they fuck up like the banking and GM CEO's that accepted bailouts a few years ago, then I want some heads to roll - not give them a welfare bailout and then they turn around and give themselves raises for failing. Is that fair in your mind? A regular business goes bankrupt.

What makes me mad about the taxation of fortune five hundred corporations are the waters edge loopholes whereas they shelter profits overseas. Lower the rate and make ever dollar taxable in the US where they enjoy every benefit of being a US corporation. Funny how this subject very seldom ever comes up.

Absolutely, my initial argument was with Zero's sweeping condemnation of all oil executives (or poor/ambiguous wording). The government should not be involved with giving private businesses money unless the government is buying goods or services from a private business.

My next arguments were with your MBA comment.

Neither party is interested in fixing the problem because it means losing a lot of campaign money, and thus is... Well, not really political suicide, but it's like cutting your legs off. I had a faint glimmer of hope with Obama even though I have quite a bit of disagreements with his economic and foreign policies, and was let down. I had a faint glimmer of hope with the Tea Party, hoping that politicians that were primarily business men and outsiders to the political culture would help fix some of the inherent problems.

Again, nothing but disappointment. Obama's screwing us from the left, the tea party's screwing us from the right, and the GOP and democrats are fighting over who gets to screw us in the face.

I never really trusted the Tea Party, since protest movements rarely accomplish much more than to blow off a little steam and spout a whole lot of hot air. I quickly lost patience with the movement once it adopted blowhard demagogues like Sarah Palin as its mouthpieces, and once I started reading quotes from Tea Partiers in which they claimed to be for "small government" but didn't want to touch Medicare and Social Security, because, well, they had paid into it and therefore were "owed" those entitlements, the movement lost all credibility in my eyes.

Gasoline prices aren't high. CEOs get paid millions because the number of people that can do the job they do are about the same as the number of veterans that can compete and win in the NFL. You know, other people that get millions. Not to say that they can't do their jobs better or more ethically, but I really hate hearing people complain about CEOs getting anywhere from $200,000 to millions. They're worth as much as they are valuable to the company.

If the CEO of Exxon Mobil or GE or GM (pick any other) dropped dead right now those companies would still continue to make obscene profits and still get billions in tax breaks and pay no taxes.
They aren't worth the crazy amount of money they are paid.

I didn't condemn anyone, but when I see gas prices continuing to rise and they are making record profits quarter after quarter, it gets a little disheartening. I know inflation plays a role, just not how much. We as a nation are getting slammed at the pump, while these folks are living large.

From a high level it appears the rich are getting more rich and the less rich are getting taken. I'm one of those folks that thinks the world should be more fair than lopsided. Also, I understand, the world isn't fair, but doesn't mean I can't think it should be.

I also think I should be able to own a Lamborghini without having to be an athlete, CEO of a company taking advantage of others or by winning the lottery to do so. Maybe if I had excellent credit, no kids and two jobs I'd be able to make payments on one?

Two options: you could start your own company and become successful with that or you could call Lamborghini and tell them that you think their prices are too high for the average man and that they should lower them. :P

Back to the original post - I'm just amazed that this company spilled millions or billions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico and the CEO gets a 22% pay increase! It reminds me of the banks; they're going down, but top executives continue to receive massive bonuses that are supposedly based on performance. If the company just had its worst year, I'm not sure what the justification is for the executives to receive a bonus or pay increase.

I remember when i was a kid, and the "gas war" was to see who could have the LOWEST prices. I remember gas at 19 CENTS a gallon! And a few times as low as 15 cents.
The reason we have to pay such rediculous prices is that the "tree huggers" here have made it impossible for us to go and get our OWN oil, which is there for the taking.
Drill off shore in the gulf, in Texas, in Alaska, and we wouldn't have to allow foreign countries to OWN us.
But some poor "spotted owl" or "rare" fern might get MURDERED!!! So we have to pay whatever THEY want us to pay.
They COULD increase production, and lower gas prices.....but why SHOULD they? If they can get $20 for a barrel of oil, or $200, which do you think they will ask for?
They have a gun to our collective heads, and we COULD have kept it from ever happening. But plants and such are WAY more important then us being able to support ourselves, right?

I've done a fair amount of programming, but in my experience I always assume I was in error. After all, I'm writing the program and the compiler is doing exactly what it's supposed to, and the computer performing the exact instructions it's supposed to. If the end result isn't what I expected it to be, it was my fault. I also like to think that I admit that I'm wrong more than most people.

By the way, sorry in advance. There's just something about you that makes me want to ARGUE with you. Must mean I don't hate you ;)

"I really fail to grasp why gas prices need to be so high while these oil exec's continue to get massive raises and record profit. "

Sure, your previous message implies that at least some of your blame is being placed on the Transocean CEO in particular but "these oil exec's" seems to target a much larger group of executives.

I didn't condemn anyone, but when I see gas prices continuing to rise and they are making record profits quarter after quarter, it gets a little disheartening. I know inflation plays a role, just not how much. We as a nation are getting slammed at the pump, while these folks are living large.

I'm a programmer, in case you didn't understand where I was going with that comment.

Yes, many seem to jump for joy when I post because they feel apt to argue with anything I say. It's crazy. For years, I figured it was just women ...

I believe the CEO in the article produces the oil pumping equipment. I was more so aiming at the CEO of say Exxon, BP, or whomever else are the actual oil companies.
