Appropos of nothing in particular, save a desire to go off topic ( :magnifyglass: ), this is also the way to get better at thinking about economic matters.

And its why so many of my students frustrate the heck out of me. They're real diligent about reading the book and coming to class (because they're "good students" and that's what they've been taught good students do), but they spend very little time practicing and applying and practicing and applying. They memorize the theory, but they never come close to where they can do that deep forgetting that doddpower talks about.

It's sad. Even when I was in college last century, the kids studied to take the test, not really learn the stuff. It's all about getting that piece of paper that certifies you are officially educated.

This is my exact problem with how American education works. Instead of teaching concepts and applying them we're just asking students to memorize the information temporarily only to forget it later. Instead of teaching critical thought and analysis we give specific requirements (like length of a paper).

I had an English teacher Junior year of high school who assigned us a 2-3 page paper about a poem we had just read. After we turned it in he said "alright, now cut the fat and revise that paper into 1 page or less." It was an interesting learning experience and taught me a lot about trimming dead wood. He also said this "I don't care about the length of your papers, I care about the quality." Needless to say it was the best English class I ever had.

We're also not teaching students learning skills. Part of basic education should be helping children realize what learning style is most effective for them and then focusing on that. We're in an age where information is widely available and cheap. If only people knew how to teach themselves better.

That's a good English teacher.

I agree with everything you said but must add one more. Parents are a big part of the problem. When a kid actually shows some passion in a subject, parents often say something along the lines of "that's nice, but how are you going to make any money in it?" Stupid parents. Way to kill creativity and passion there.
