Lande says Pouncey could be Packers' pick

By Rick Klauer of the Journal Sentinel

March 11, 2011 |(99) Comments

In his mock draft, Russ Lande of Sporting News has the Packers selecting Florida center Mike Pouncey with the 32nd pick in the draft next month.

Pouncey's profile at NFL.com says he is "arguably this class' top interior offensive line prospect. He has outstanding football IQ and the ability to become a pro-bowl starter at guard or center. Has great feet needed to mirror pass rushers and pull down the line. Uses his hands well when battling in pass protection."

NFL.com senior analyst Pat Kirwan also recently selected Pouncey (6-foot-5, 303 pounds) as the pick for the Packers.

Mike Pouncey's twin brother Maurkice was a first-round pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, but the starting center did not play in Super Bowl XLV because of injury.

I actually think that, if he somehow does fall to the 32nd pick in the draft, it's as close to a no brainer as you can get, really. Just like Bulaga last year.

Yeah, I don't think he will fall to the 32nd pick. It'd be great if he did, but I just don't see it happening.

I think Mike Pouncey is a little over-hyped by fans because of his brother performance. Most scouts I've heard seem to think that Maurkice was a much better prospect than Mike. Scouts and GMs are more likely to rely on tape, than reputation.

It seems like Mike is more of a guard than a center (at least from what I saw watching Florida games). I'm not sure if he's a Ted Thompson-type pick. I believe that Daryn Colledge was the highest drafted interior linemen by Ted Thompson.

I think that GB will go o-line in round 1 or round 2. It probably depends on whether they see TJ Lang as a future starter (and if so, whether they see in as a guard or a tackle).

If they see Lang as at RT, Mike Pouncey could be the pick. If they see Lang as a guard, Ted might want to trade up for a shot at a quality tackle (Carimi, Costanzo, Sherrod).

Much like Mike Pouncey is overrated because of his brother; Packer fans over-hype Lang. He regressed in 2010. Maybe it was injuries, but I think competition is needed for him. Right now, he is not a lock to make the team next year.

Pouncey isn't as good as his brother. I also don't think he can play center, but I think you can plug him in at LG and have a solid player. With so many teams needing OL ahead of the Packers, I'd be surprised if he is there at No. 32.

If he is, I would be surprised if the Packers did not select him.

The thing with TJ Lang, if I recall correctly, was that the coaching staff wanted him to work on last offseason was his strength. He injured his wrist early in the offseason, preventing him from getting stronger. With that in mind, he never really developed.

With the lockout looming, I hope Lang taking the initiative to get in the weight room. A full offseason program would have benefited him tremendously. I think he has the talent to be a starter in this league.

If the Packers don't see Lang or Newhouse as an eventual starter, we need to draft 1 or 2 linemen this year.

Unless Lang get worse I don't see how he's not a lock to make the team... he's clearly the OL 6th guy this last year and looked as good as the starters when he got his shot to play other than one bad drive out of three drives against Peppers, which I think people are making too big of a deal of...

Believe it or not Peppers sometimes makes great OTs look bad (not saying Lang is great just that Peppers can do that)... Lang has one bad drive and two good drives against Peppers... that's not bad at all IMO...

As for Pouncey, I have a hard time seeing the Steelers pass on him with the 31st pick if he's good enough to be a 1st round pick that is...

On this Reed kid why would Ted take him #32? I don't know if he's on anybody's top 64 although I could be wrong there.

I think it could be a great 2nd round pick but I doubt Ted Thompson is going to go first round with this guy. If he's still there and that good somewhere around 25th of the second round it would be a great time to swap and give up Barnett.

I believe he saw action against Detroit and they ate him up. I recall reading Bob McGinn say as much. He is one of the few opinions that I value quite a bit.

Your No. 6 OL is not a lock, especially when you have a developmental program as the Packers have. There is already talk that Nick McDonald surpassed him at LG. That leaves Lang to battle it out at OT, which I dont think he can do.

I'm not saying he isn't going to get better though. I think he can, but I think people are still judging him on his rookie season, when he was a worthy fill-in lineman.

My point is that he was not that player last year.

I prefer Reed to Justin Houston. If my memory is correct, he had his way with Iowa. Watch that game and you see first round ability. Plus, he has long locks like Clay Matthews and A.J. Hawk. You cannot deny the continuity. 🙂

I think there's a very good chance Pouncey will fall to us. And I don't think it's a lock for us to take him if he does, if there are solid pass rushers avaivable. There are plenty of solid guards avaivable at the bottom of the 2nd.

Pouncey struggles with fast guys. I don't like that at all. Otherwise, he's pretty similar to Maurkice.
