http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2011/02/23/when-it-comes-to-holding-the-ball-joe-flacco-tops-ben-roethlisb/

Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger has deservedly developed a reputation as the quarterback who creates his own sacks. The Steelers' quarterback believes that he can dodge or shrug off pass rushers. And because of that he extends plays, buying time. Sometimes it leads to a big play, sometimes it leads to a sack.

Roethlisberger may be known for extending plays (and racking up high sack totals), but Baltimore's Joe Flacco was actually the king of holding the ball too long in 2010. In logging the time of each and every sack in the NFL in 2010, Flacco's 25 sacks of 3.1 seconds or more were five more than anyone else in the league.

I chose three seconds as the demarcation line because it's a pretty fair cutoff point for where a sack can no longer be blamed on a quarterback's blockers. The median sack time in the NFL last year was 2.7 seconds, just as it was in 2009. Obviously a line should be able to hold a three-man rush back longer than a eight-man all-out blitz, but for practical purposes, three seconds is the point where a quarterback should generally know that he has to get rid of the ball.

The leaderboard of the over-time sacks is filled with names you may expect. Flacco and Roethlisberger lead the way, but Chicago's Jay Cutler isn't far behind. Michael Vick's legs get him out of trouble a lot, but they also mean that he will also rack up some sacks.

At the other end of the spectrum, Peyton Manning has an internal clock that simply doesn't allow him the hold the ball for long. Only one of his 15 sacks last season was when he held the ball for three seconds or more. It runs in the family as Eli Manning also had only one long sack. Tennessee's Kerry Collins was also notable for very few long sacks.

Nice that he was able to drop 19 sacks over the off-season, but it is peculiar that he was sacked twice as often even when he had the ball for less than 3 seconds. Blitzes not being picked up, I suppose.

I think you also have to look into other factors like is it a pass team or a run team. A pass team could have more sacks just because they try to pass it a lot more.

Also Eli and Peyton are in the top 6 in INTs thrown. While Ben Ben is in the bottom 2 and Joe Flacco is in the bottom 11.

So yes Eli and Peyton got the ball out of their hands better but they also put it in the other teams hands much better. And the idea is to keep the ball and keep the chains moving...

Advantage: The QB who weren't giving away the ball!

I'm not really that surprised. When I've watched Flacco, which has not been terribly often in all fairness, he seems to have the pocket presence of Hellen Keller. For me to formulate a stronger opinion on him I'm going to have to watch him more but I honestly can't think of an NFL quarterback that appears, to me at least, to have worse pocket presence than Flacco. I just don't think he feels the pressure the right way, and in particular against the Chiefs in the wild card he seemed to move into pressure rather than buy himself time. I become less and less sold on him the more time passes.

Guys like Big Ben (as much as I am NOT sold on Roethlisberger as well) and Vick I can excuse because they can make things happen with pressure gets to them. Flacco is not one of those guys.

One thing I notice about this list is there appears to be no correlation between this stat and how good the QBs are. It seems like a statistical outlier. So many things can affect it, sometimes in weird ways, like the kind of offense a team runs (short throws or long throws?), how good the receivers are at getting open, how good the offensive line is (a better line might drive this stat up if the receivers can't get open), and a QB's mobility, which also drives the stat up.

A rough approximation of the correlation coefficient in my head would seem to indicate that if one wants a winning record, it's far better for one's quarterback to take a few extra sacks than to throw interceptions.

Which is what people like CHFF have been saying for years, of course. It is the job of the quarterback to throw touchdowns. Even more so, it's the job of the quarterback not to throw interceptions.

To be fair to Cutler, Martz's scheme depends on the OL blocking long enough for longer routes to develop. So does ours, and Aaron does a pretty good job of extending plays.
