How can we call James Starks fresh? What about about being in football shape, why's that not mentioned, yet I hear it from players all of the time when they talk about coming back to the field after a long duration off of it.

I think the fresh legs is not a valid point.

I went with Grant, but if the owners get their wish and get an 18 game schedule it will be real nice to have 2 backs sharing the load.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I'm not trying to downplay what Starks did for the Packers and would definitely use "football shape" as well as "fresh" to describe James Starks. I think both are valid points but just because you are in football shape doesn't mean the season doesn't wear n' tear on those players that are in football shape. James Starks, compared to most players, was fresh.

He is going to be one helluva player for the Packers. I like the kid a lot and he is a smart runningback.

I don't remember McCarthy saying Ryan Grant had a hot hand and wanted to keep feeding him the ball. He's said it twice about James Starks.

How many times has Grant had 20+ carries?

Use Grant up, and save Stark's body. Keep BJ for third down. Grant finishes up his current contract and then hits the bricks.

I honestly think you mix and match and do not necessarily assign a designated starter and backup to either.

It all depends on who is in a groove - what is working and what isn't

By committee I think. Depth and different options can only be better for the team.

Of course, running backs have a very short shelf life and Grant might have declined after the injury - I think we can only make a true distinction between both during pre-season.

How about making them both starters. :)

In 2010 it was the Bomb Formation (Kuhn/Johnson/Starks) and the SuperBomb formation (with Raji). In 2011 it will be the MachineGun formation with Kuhn, Johnson, Starks, and Grant.

:)

Bingo! I made it almost all the way through this thread before somebody said what I was going to say.

Really, it will be decided in training camp, but if they are near equal in performance (as I would expect them to be) the coaches should go with Grant for the reason DakotaT noted.

McCarthy never said that about Grant because Grant was the unquestioned starter. I suppose he could've said it when Grant ran for 200+ yards in that playoff game against the Seahawks, but he didn't. Or you could take your pick of several games where Grant ran for more yards than Starks ever did.

To answer your question about how many times Grant had 20+ carries, I just counted and the number is 18. Is that not enough for you? Or maybe too much? I'm not sure where you were going with that comment.

Unless one of them significantly outplays the other in training camp and the pre-season I see us splitting their carries and utilizing their strengths effectively.
