Punters are an after-thought but wow was that guy good. Especially when you compare him to the Bears punter. He made a huge difference, not only taking Hester out of the game but those beautiful punts in that weather inside the 20.

"Following six of his punts Sunday, the Bears started drives on their own 16, 2, 11, 18, 20 and 10."

NUTS! Even the one that is listed as 20 there, should have been at the 1 if our guy didn't mess it up.

CHICAGO - Tim Masthay helped kick Devin Hester and the Chicago Bears right out of the playoffs.

Coming off an easy week in which he didn't have to punt a single time, Masthay was a major factor in the NFC championship game Sunday, constantly leaving the Bears with poor field position and shutting down their star kick returner.

Masthay averaged 41.8 yards on eight punts, but it was where they landed as much as far how far they traveled that made the difference in the Packers' 21-14 win.

Following six of his punts Sunday, the Bears started drives on their own 16, 2, 11, 18, 20 and 10.

And Green Bay's coverage team hemmed in the dangerous Hester when he did field the ball. Hester, who holds the NFL record with 14 combined kickoff and punt returns for TDs, had just three punt returns for 16 yards total, the longest being 11. He also returned a kickoff for 24 yards.

Hester was never a force as a receiver, either. He was the target of four passes and didn't have a catch.

The Packers allowed Hester to break free for a 62-yard touchdown on a punt return during the teams' first meeting, a 20-17 Bears victory in Chicago on Sept. 27.

Masthay was certainly well rested. The Packers didn't need him last week in their 48-21 playoff romp at Atlanta.

He did play EXTREMELY good. I can't believe his turnaround after how he was playing at the beginning of the season. I keep on waiting for him to revert back, but fortunately he keeps me pleasantly surprised! The kid has skills, and we need to hold onto him because with our D and his ability to give us great defensive field position, we have an advantage over any opponent.
Green Bay: Home of the Green & Gold. And the hunter orange. And the camouflage.

I wouldn't necessarily say Bush screwed the pooch on the 1 yard line, it was tough to switch his momentum and he nearly re-establish himself outside of the end zone.

Regardless, hell of a game by Masthay and he's really proven himself ever since the Jets game!

Phenomenal game yesterday. I'll be honest, this whole offseason and preseason I was NOT convinced Ted Thompson & MM knew wtf they were doing regarding punters. I think we've got our guy though. His last few games have me convinced.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

I agree with musccy that Bush didn't screw up. It would've been a great play if he made it. And he still had a great game.

Some people didn't like that Masthay did kick the ball to Hester a few times. I was okay with that. The punts were near the sideline where Hester could be hemmed in. I don't like when the punting team is COMPLETELY chicken. By limiting Hester's opportunities, it seemed like they prevented him from getting into a rhythm with his returns.

I think special teams needs a LOT more attention after this game. The Bears were supposed to dominate the ST battle and we had them pinned back for most of the game. I give credit to Masthay, every ST player, and Slocum.

Masthay had another helluva game.
I would have put him up there for game MVP but it was hard to overlook Raji and Shields.
I hope he at least got the special teams game ball. His contribution was huge.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Masthay is a keeper, I will absolutely flip if we let him get away from us. His clutch punting has helped us win at LEAST 3 games.

The curse of Craig Hentrich is finally over. Let's hope Uncle Tightwad Ted has enough money in the coffers to lock him up.
