Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers out with concussion

When he struggles, so does the unit considering there is no dependable running game to lean on.

Rodgers was in the midst of an ugly performance against the Detroit Lions when he was knocked out the game with a concussion. The Packers went on to lose 7-3.

The Packers offense was virtually nonexistent during the first half and Rodgers seemed like he was trying to make something happen late in the second quarter. An underrated runner, Rodgers scrambled 18 yards and chose not to slide as defenders closed in for the tackle. He was hit from the front-side by safety Amari Spievey, but it was the back-side contact from Landon Johnson that jolted Rodgers.

He got up slowly, played three more snaps, including a sack by Andre Fluellen, and never returned.

The concussion is the second of the season for Rodgers, who suffered one Oct. 10 at Washington, and he will have to pass more stringent tests to return to the field.

I can't really measure the level of his concussion right now, coach Mike McCarthy said after the game. It's something that he'll go through the normal protocol. I was told that his head his clear and he has a headache.

He was kind of groggy after those two plays he stayed in there, so that's when we had the decision to pull him.

Rodgers had completed 7-of-11 passes for 46 yards with an interception before his day ended. The Packers had just two first downs while Rodgers was in the game.

Matt Flynn replaced Rodgers and moved the ball deep inside Lions territory on the first two possessions of the second half, but came away with just three points total.

Flynn finished the day 15-of-26 for 177 yards and one interception. And the Packers couldnt turn to a run game that managed just 66 yards on 20 attempts, including five yards for 35 yards from Rodgers and Flynn. The running backs totaled 15 carries for 31 yards.

Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said there werent any major changes to the play-calling with Rodgers out and McCarthy refused to acknowledge Rodgers absence may have played a significant role in the season-low three points.

The Packers hadnt been held to three points or less since a 35-0 loss to the New England Patriots on Nov. 19, 2006.

It's no excuse, McCarthy said. It's no excuse at all. We played poor on offense today and that starts with me.

We were poor and I'm not very pleased about it.

The team didnt have a timetable for Rodgers return, though he did not miss a game after being concussed against Washington. He will have to pass several medical tests before he is cleared to play.

Rodgers has been criticized for not sliding at times and leaving himself open for injury. And it happened Sunday.

Rodgers was not in the locker room after the game and was not made available for comment.

You definitely dont want someone who is that important to your offense out of the game, center Scott Wells said. At the same time, with the playmakers we have on the field, I felt we should have been able to come back.

We had opportunities and we squandered them.

I like the following comments:

Concussions ended the careers of Steve Young and Troy Aikman. Brian Westbrook is just another concussion away from being forced into retirement. Ted Johnson, who was a linebacker for the Pats a few years ago was showing the early signs of Alzheimers at age 33 because of too many concussions. John Mackey, one of the greatest TE's in history has severe dementia and, for all intents and purposes, is a vegetable. Mike Webster died from Alzheimers likely brought on from concussions suffered while playing for the Steelers. If Rogers would decide to walk away from the game I wouldn't blame him.

If Aaron Rodgers is as smart as everyone says he is... we're in trouble. A smart person would milk out the rest of this season, put the 8.5 million in the bank and retire before he has nothing but scrambled eggs for brains .....20 years from now. This guy is not going to be around much longer.

Two seemingly mild concussions, and we're talking about retirement? Conversations really spin out control after a bad game.

That's the good news. The bad news is that he'll probably be a Jet.

I had a similar thought, but it then it occurred to me that the Vikings will be in the market for for a veteran quarterback.

Zero2Cool (6h) : Johnson didn't make it until 2020. Ring 2023. 🤷 Personally, he should have been in years prior to Hall.
Zero2Cool (6h) : HUMP DAY
beast (6h) : Guys that have a good shot at making the NFL Hall of Fame usually get into their teams pretty fast
beast (6h) : Yeah, but is Kampman and the others in the NFL Hall of Fame?
Zero2Cool (6h) : Johnson was Hall of Fame, 2020. Should haev been in Ring a year later, not three years.
Zero2Cool (6h) : I could be wrong there though
Zero2Cool (6h) : Guys like Kampman, Tim Harris, Al Harris, etc all over 15 years. Hall of Fame is 5 year wait
Zero2Cool (6h) : I guess I see players in Packers Hall come way later
beast (6h) : Yeah, usually teams hall of fames are a much lower bar than the NFL
Zero2Cool (6h) : is it uncommon for Hall before Ring?
Zero2Cool (7h) : S Xavier McKinney named first-team All-Pro by NFLPA
beast (8h) : I missed it, sorry, but he got into the NFL Hall of Fame years before that
Zero2Cool (8h) : Jones took his sweet ole time!
Zero2Cool (8h) : Yeah, he's in the ring of honor, just saw video and his name is up there
Zero2Cool (8h) : Didn't they have a thing in 2023 for Jimmy's ring of honor? I swear I saw it
beast (9h) : Though if they're legitimately trying to re-sign MM, then it makes sense.
beast (9h) : Jerry Jones still hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor, but he's in the NFL's Hall of Fame, Jones is petty
Mucky Tundra (20h) : Unless the Cowboys are planning an extension, seems kinda petty
beast (22h) : Cowboys denied Bears request
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : From what I'm reading, MM is under contract through the 14th of January; after that he's free game
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : McCarthy let go or not extended??
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Chicago Bears have asked the Dallas Cowboys permission to interview Mike McCarthy for head coaching vacancy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : The winners page that is
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : I was not hoping for that. It messes up the page lol
beast (6-Jan) : Thank you, and I was really opening we were going to get 4 or more tied for the top 3.

Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : Packers have $60M+ of 2025 cap space on paper TODAY.
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Missed FG into a Lions TD; that'll do pig, that'll do
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : That might be it for the Vikings
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Oh so the refs do know what intentional grounding is
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : what the hell was that Goff?! Not much pressure and he just air mails it to Harrison
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : They really need to to get rid of the auto first down for illegal contact
Martha Careful (6-Jan) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Even when GB got pressure he was throwing darts; vs no pressure on that last pass he just air mails an open guy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : didn't have guys in his face ... pressure makes difference
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Where was this Darnold vs GB?
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : BALL DON'T LIE
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : how was that not a safety? Goff throws it at an offensive lineman
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero, I thought that was a given! ;)
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero I looked through earlier and noticed the same thing. Bonkers year. I just wonder if beast put any money on games
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : I'm hoping for BLOODBATH. Pummel one another.
