I think he probably just took himself out for precaution. Anyone would have a major problem after slamming ur helmet THAT hard off the turf.

New NFL rules state he can't return if he is showing any symptoms... so it is out of the players and coaches hands.

Dated July 4, 2010

Now, a player showing symptoms such as memory loss, confusion, dizziness, or problems with balance may not return to action until hes checked out by a physician.

I know it's no joke, but are you suggesting all concussions are the same?

naw..2 concussions in 13 games is no big deal.

players recover from that all the time!

especially qb's, that's a position after all that takes no analytical skills whatsoever.

This all seems premature to me. Maybe Packer fans have developed a need to worry about whether or not their QB will retire. Sort of like how people who have been abused often expect to be abused again.

People can say whatever about Aaron.. hell I have been known to get on him at times with opinion.

But one thing is certain.. that guy is one hell of a QB, tough as nails and no one can question his desire to win.

Cunningham counted on his front four.. took away the quick passing game and put the pressure square on the offensive line, lining up wide and using speed on a face track to neutralize the passing game all day long, with Rodgers or Flynn on the field.

It forced the Packers QB's out of the pocket.. and Rodgers competitive fire got the best of him this time, along with that damn artificial turf.. he isn't one to slide and goes for every yard.

The NFL is focused on cutting down concussions.. well then.. they might want to address the damn playing surfaces in some of these stadiums.. and not just the defensive players hits. I wonder how many of concussions are due from the contact with the playing surface.. concrete, no matter how many layers you cover it with.. does not give.

+1 for pointing this out.

Everyone is talking about how responsible/smart it was/wasn't for Rodgers not to slide on that play. But virtually none of them realize that the injury didn't come from being hit by the other team, but from being whacked by the floor.

Or the fact that the odds of blowing a knee/leg/ankle are likely substantially greater if you slide feet first than if you dive forward.

If he had been playing on grass -- even the frozen turf -- how much less force would have been distributed into his head and how much more would have been absorbed by the ground?
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

The injury DID come from being hit by the Lions player. That's the blow that forced Rodgers' head to bounce off the turf. If a guy pushes somebody off a cliff, should the defense attorney say that it was the ground that killed him?

Also, are you saying that a QB should never slide for fear of injuring his leg? I've never seen a QB injured while sliding.

Rodgers knew that surface he was playing on. He's played on it many times before. He should have gone down. But this is the first time this has happened to him, so I can't blame him too much.

I think we don't know enough yet. My kid has had 3 concussions in 2 years. After the last one, the CT scan showed enough damage from a previous concussion that he is not supposed to play ANY contact sports for another year, and only then if the CT scan shows no further damage.

Of course, one of the concussions was being kicked on the bare head to unconsciousness, but the other 2 were football related and he never lost consciousness at all.

So, I would have to say wait and see. I am not concerned about retirement at this point, but I am concerned about the rest of this season.

Thanks for the info. It seems I've heard that when you have a concussion you are more susceptible to having another one if you get another blow to the head not too long afterwards. That would make sense--it's like any other injury that way.

That's actually not too bad of an idea. I was playing a tackle football game the other week and the ground was frozen so it hurt like crazy. I can only imagine what turf feels like.

I might be starting to see Andy Reid's point here. He complained about the hits Vick took in the pocket because he thought refs had the perception he could take them because of how often he ran with it. Maybe that's why it's been so hard for Rodgers to get the call when he takes a helmet-to-helmet in the pocket? I know this last hit was legal but we've all seen the non-calls for Rodgers. It's a bit ridiculous.

Well maybe the stupid NFL should think about better helmets and better turf. They want to increase the games while they don't invest enough to prevent concussions. Well as Mike McCarthy said he has a headache only other than that he is fine, so I am hopeful he will be able to go.

"Kingdom22" wrote:

The irony of your quote is that it is exactly the better helmets that have caused some of the problems. I guarantee if we were still playing with leather helmets, you wouldn't see players leading with their head or such violent helmet-to-helmet hits. The improvements in protective gear have allowed players to play more aggressively (some might add recklessly) knowing that they are not at great danger of self-injury.

The cumulative effects of repeated concussions are dire. Look at what they did to the promising career of Eric Lindros in the NHL. It is not "just a headache." There is an informative article in the Journal-Sentinel today on this. Concussions in Football
Highlights:

"What it comes down to is mismanagement - athletes not talking about their injury and their coaches or trainers not seeking them out. It's like, 'Don't ask, don't tell.' If you seek that kid out, they will be much less inclined to say, 'I'm OK.' "

"The conundrum is that a single, uncomplicated concussion is a transient neurological event with a complete recovery in a week," he said. "We speculate that that model may not apply in a scenario where there are recurrent concussions. The more of these that occur to your brain, the higher the risk of long-term problems."

I hope for Aaron Rodgers sake his is the single transient event. However, the fact this is the 2nd in 13 games leaves me concerned for his long term health and his ability to fulfill his potentially promising career.
